The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Well that's just the thing - and what not only publishers should be asking, but consumers. Why would any of us want to (financially) support such a company? Even if they say, "Sorry, our bad," they've already revealed their hand. It is like that saying: "When someone tells you who they really...

Hollywood's creativity problem and a (ranty) stroll through endless remakes...

I would agree with you to an extent, and even a group of experienced and skilled film-makers are going to vary on what they like and don't like. But I do think there are two factors that tend to get written off, or at least diminished, in such conversations: One is actual skill and craftsmanship...

    What are you listening too?

I've been revisiting King Crimson of late. They were probably the most impactful band on my youthful self - when I discovered them in junior year of high school (I think), way back in 1991, I was moving out of my alt/electro-pop phase and into bands like Pink Floyd, and was totally blown away. I...

I read that title first with another "o."

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

Well, I guess I got to enjoy it in a schadenfreude stick-it-to-the-Man sort of away for a bit, at least ;).

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

Yeah, 399 of 471 is 85%...so that would go with the old number. Maybe the algorithm only accounts for the x-most recent reviews? I'm also not sure if it is a straight up percentage. Maybe some reviewers are more weighted than others.

HBOMax Explained and Streaming Service 2022 Year End Review!

One service you never mention, that is worth checking out, is AMC+. On its own it isn't great, but it is cheap ($1.99 promo, and I think $4.99 after that), and also includes the Sundance Channel (if you like high-brow and/or obscure stuff) and Shudder (if you like shlocky horror). So you end up...

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

So this is weird. Rings of Power was "stuck" at 84% on the Rotten Tomatoes tomatometer for months, and it plummeted to 52% sometime within the last few days. I guess it finally caught up with public sentiment.

Hollywood's creativity problem and a (ranty) stroll through endless remakes...

The corollary--which I find to be at least as common, if not more so--is, "I like it, therefore it can't be bad, and all criticisms are nutty and/or haterism." Nothing wrong with liking things that aren't deemed of high quality, but quality is a real thing - it probably just needs to be...

I require a Snarf's Guide to Nic Cage post, including the Absolutely Correct and Only Way to Rank All Nic Cage movies (and I mean all of them). On a serious note, I thought Pig was really good.

The OGL 1.1 is not an Open License

LOL...well, at least the double mistake led to a humorous moment. Next time I'll make sure to cry foul.

The OGL 1.1 is not an Open License

And the opposite is true, as well: it doesn't matter what WotC does, the majority will defend them and accuse others of crying fowl, being doomsayers, unreasonable, wrong, etc etc. People are allowed to have different takes. Whether or not the OP is correct in their assessment, I'm unsure and...

Re-reading the Hobbit, it almost feels like a distinct setting from LotR's Middle-Earth

Yeah, that is part of the creative process for many, in my opinion and experience. In conceiving a world or story, people, places and things just "appear" and part of the fun is trying to figure out who they are. It is similar to what Jung called Active Imagination: a dialogue with the unconscious.

Artificial Intelligence and the future of Human Endeavor

First of all, I should say that I don't think AI will ever becomes "sentient" - not in the way that organic beings are. This isn't as much due to biological vs. silicon life, but is more philosophical and has to do with my view that the human being - all living beings, really - are "receivers of...

Re-reading the Hobbit, it almost feels like a distinct setting from LotR's Middle-Earth

One thing to consider is that The Hobbit wasn't written as "the first Middle-earth story." It was essentially a novelization of a bed-time story he told to his kids, which his friends at Oxford encouraged him to write up and publish. In his telling and writing of it, he wasn't placing it within...

NEWS; Gunning down the Snyderverse UPDATE Cavill gets the Kryptonite handshake!

Despite some flaws, I liked Man of Steel. And I actually think Batman v. Superman is overly maligned - I thought the first two-thirds or so was pretty good, with some nice elements (e.g. I loved the "Superman dystopia" dream sequence). The theatrical JL was a horrible movie, but the Snyder cut...

D&D (2024) One D&D Permanently Removes The Term 'Race'

This relates to the second example I gave - of whether or not fantasy should follow the same rules as reality. I mean, for one, maybe "genetics" doesn't exist in a fantasy world - that's a scientific concept of our world, and really only of the last couple hundred years. Fantasy is a form of...

NEWS; Gunning down the Snyderverse UPDATE Cavill gets the Kryptonite handshake!

At this point I think the best approach is to just start over again, and reboot the whole DC universe. I mean, quite frankly, the DC movies--as a whole--are a mess. There are some good ones, but the whole thing feels fragmented and uneven, and a far cry from the Golden Age of the MCU (phases...
