Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

Meaning, their opinion of the show differs greatly from your own. Oh, and just to be clear: I wouldn't give it 1 stars. I found it entertaining enough, and there's always the "at least its fantasy!" boost, for me to rank it so. Even though I think it widely misses the mark on adapting Tolkien...

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

I've scanned some of the 1 star reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and most are generally thoughtful and almost none are "culture war-y" (unless whether Rings of Power is sufficiently Tolkienian is a culture war issue, which it is not). Most of the negative reviews I've seen on various sites--whether...

How so? I'm honestly curious (assuming there's a missing "c" in there). As I said in my critique, the elves are one of the areas that (I think) the Rings of Power goes furthest astray from Tolkien. They're almost closer to Gygaxian elves, to be honest. Jackson's elves weren't perfect, but they...

Despite my harsh post above, I can actually get down with this...to a point. I'd replace "awesome" with "Good enough to watch, considering that I'm a big fantasy nerd, and bad Middle-earth is better than no Middle-earth."

Oh, my mistake - I must have missed that upthread.

Well, that's not what was being talked about here, or at least in what I replied to. Henadic Theologian said something about "specific things looking bad." You said that was "blatantly incorrect." I said (in paraphrase), "I disagree, some things look bad." That's a matter of aesthetic...

I will only say that something "looking cheap" and "being expensive" are not mutually exclusive. I realize that there was a huge budget - but just throwing money at something doesn't mean it will be good. Oh, I forgot the "hard" part in my pre-emptive ;). But yeah, people disagree - no problems...

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

As for my view of the series as a whole, as I said at one point here, my initial impression after the first two episodes was: "Not as bad as I feared, but worse than I hoped - maybe there's some potential here." After finishing the series, I find it a mix of "kinda ok, entertaining in a CWish...

Rings of Power -- all opinions and spoilers welcome thread.

What is blatantly incorrect? That some things look bad? I tend to agree with that - and I have watched it. Mostly it looks good, but two things in particular stood out to me: 1) The Numenorean armor. It looked like it was made out of plastic or rubber because, well, it probably was. 2) The...

Have you ever had a real experience you consider to be supernatural?

Well, I was just quoting Merriam Webster. But yes, I would agree that "ordinary" is better than "normal," especially when we bring in shamanic, mystical and transpersonal experiences.

What TV series related to the "Matter of Middle-earth" would you prefer to see?

That could be fit in with my Angmar idea, though I think the rangers didn't really emerge until after that (when the last king died). But I've always been intrigued about that period of a thousandish years before LotR - which is when the rangers would have been rangering.

What TV series related to the "Matter of Middle-earth" would you prefer to see?

I have two answers, depending upon who is making the series, and how they approach and understand Tolkien's work. If someone took a "Peter Jackson approach" - that is, not inserting themselves into it too much, but trying to adapt Tolkien and his ideas as faithfully as possible - then I'd love...

Have you ever had a real experience you consider to be supernatural?

Perhaps a better term would be paranormal. Merriam Webster's first definition of supernatural is "Of or relating to existence outside the natural world." The first definition of paranormal is "Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation." Meaning, supernatural is implied to...

Shows that I go back and rewatch, shows that I should

Game of Thrones is the only series that I've watched all the way through twice. There are plenty of other shows that I have "spot-watched" episodes two or more times, including Star Trek TOS and TNG. I've watched every Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm episode at least twice (except for the...

[+] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - SPOILERS ALLOWED

All I can do is answer from as I understand Tolkien's lore. Whether or not the show will diverge (or how much) is anyone's guess. Sauron and Morgoth. Morgoth was defeated at the end of the First Age and cast out into the Void. He isn't dead, per se, just outside of creation, and can't come back...

[+] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - SPOILERS ALLOWED

I'm not trashing the show, at least not in this thread. Meaning, saying Tolkien wouldn't like it does not equate with trashing the show. But I hear and take the general point.

[+] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - SPOILERS ALLOWED

I think we're too far apart to have a meaningful conversation about this. Just some basic, fundamental differences in our views about the nature of art and story, the relationship of an artist and their work, etc. To address one thing, though: I'm not sure how much you know about Tolkien, but...

All they really have is legal authority - that is, who can use the names and concepts of Tolkien, not the authority to decide what "is" Tolkien. That said... ...I hear you (oh, and read the first book of that trilogy some 30ish years ago...I remember thinking, "This makes Sword of Shannara...

[+] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - SPOILERS ALLOWED

I'm making no statement as to whether Rings of Power is of quality or not, whether it is amateurish or masterful. But I also don't think that a license or identification as "professional" automatically equates with quality or masterful work. A big budget production can still seem...
