    General star wars talk/discussion/complaining

To me Star Wars is the biggest example of "should have left it with the original offerings, and moved on." As a 70s child, I was very excited about the prequels, but everything since that point just felt like a diminishing. Sure, there were decent moments, but the sum total of Star Wars...

Who’s your vote for the next James Bond?

It would be interesting to start with a very young Bond. Casino Royale had Bond's first kill, I believe, but it was a flashback. While I think Bond is best at 40-45ish, if they found the right actor, they could start with someone in their late 20s and see him grow into Bondness.

Who’s your vote for the next James Bond?

Why, though? I'm so tired of this Hollywood vs. rubes culture war game. James Bond is a dude - he's been a dude for over 70 years. What is gained by making him female? Who does it serve except Hollywood execs and those fans who think it is some kind of subversive cultural win? Why not, instead...

    Your table is YOUR table.

All of this makes me double-down on the view that every D&D world--whether published or homebrew--should have its own cosmology, its own mythology, and its own configuration of core tropes and ideas. This allows orcs and everything else to be contextual to the world itself, rather than there...

How do you layer your pizza?

    Dough - olive oil - sauce - basil - cheese - toppings - cheese

I don't see an option for Funkadelic, so bogus thread.

Who’s your vote for the next James Bond?

Daniel Craig did just fine fitting "modern audiences." Not to mention, most of the modern audience just wants a good movie and doesn't care about being preached at (I'd even say prefers not to be). Anyhow, I thought Cavill was confirmed. I guess that's an internet rumor.

Captain America: Brave New World - Official Trailer (2025)

Pretty much. To be fair, though, that is somewhat true with a lot of franchises. There's an initial great idea and inspired presentation, then diminishing returns on sequels and (worse) prequels that try to re-capture the early inspiration. Some are able to break the pattern, but the vast...

Captain America: Brave New World - Official Trailer (2025)

Part of the problem is that no new MCU film exists in a vacuum - it is always compared to what came before. From Iron Man in 2008 to End Game in 2019, there was a general upward trend; ups and downs, certainly, but the whole MCU 'congealed' into something rather epic and pleasing to a wide fan...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Didn't Michael Moorcock, if not invent, at least popularize "multiverse," at least in the context of fictional worlds? Anyhow, I haven't followed the whole conversation, so forgive me if I re-tread stuff that has already been said. I think "plane" is a bit of a mash-up term that isn't all that...

    Triple Feature (+)

Not a single film-maker, but: Interstellar, Ex Machina, Arrival - different variations on high concept SF dealing with "alien-ness," as well as human fallibility. (I'd make it a quartet and add Annihilation, but that breaks the rules). Also not a single film-maker, but variations on gnostic...

    Your table is YOUR table.

This is all very well said. To your last sentence: it is that basic decency and charity of spirit that gets lost in the kerfuffle of online debate. The intolerance for accepting differing opinions without needing to assume a more malicious intent or ideology is unfortunately all too rare. I...

    Bright moons

Is it a (scientific) planet or (fantastical) "world?" Meaning, is it a planet that, except for magic, follows the current known laws of physics? Or is it a world that need not follow any laws of physics? Assuming the latter, you could go with any number of fantastical, mythic explanations...

What are you reading in 2025?

The Sword Defiant by Gareth Hanrahan. I'm impressed. A classic-feeling fantasy that is well written and just good fun. Basic premise, going off something he said in some interview, is 20 years after a LotR type conflict, but if the One Ring had been used to defeat Sauron, and Mordor inhabited...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I'd create either a book, or set of small books, that are one-part world-building tutorial, one-part world example. First book/section would be something akin to Nentir Vale: local region, with guidance on creating locally. Second book/section would be regional, third book/section would be world...

D&D General If I had the D&D/WotC Worldbuider job, I would... (+ thread)

I'd fire the people who oked Worlds & Realms, then re-do it as "micro-settings" with MAPS and proper write-ups, including short treatments of even the most minor settings from D&D canon.

D&D (2024) Anyone Else Find It Interesting How Different The Approaches to Setting Books Is Between 5e & 5.5e?

Haven't read the whole thread, but I think maybe WotC is searching for a way to refresh the IP, and in a forward-thinking way (while they're "ahead" rather than "behind"). I've heard some remark that "D&D" is in need of a bit of a revival, in terms of world/setting/flavor. The core IP is great...

D&D General Drow & Orcs Removed from the Monster Manual

But obscure words are part of the fun of D&D. I mean, I fondly remember poring over the 1e DMG and encountering hundreds of weird words. It gave everything a sense of mystique. Has anyone ever encountered jacinth outside the context of D&D?

So, what was the deal with Zelazny's second Amber series sucking so badly?

I will second Lord of Light. Amber is OK, but I think Zelazny's best work was before that.

    Overrated/Underrated Geek Media

Agreed. I'd add "Ryan Reynolds." He's funny(ish) and talented at what he does, but a little bit goes a long way, and we never get just a little Ryan Reynolds.
