What does it take for an RPG to die?

This underscores a important point too: our bubbles will make us think a game is dead when outside our bubble it might have a thriving community and new material. I would have guessed FUDGE died with the rise of Fate, but that is apparently untrue.

    Most influential RPG

This is going to be a thread full of people's favorite games, rather than the influential ones. That is largely due to the fact that most influential media are actually under the radar and have somewhat niche audiences. Just for example, I think Savage Worlds is a great game, but I would not...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Daggerheart did not have a kickstarter. It is really weird that even people that pre-ordered it a mentally making that leap.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Here's a thought re: active communities making material: Has the rise in popularity of Discord silo'd off some of this discussion and support to make it look like to outsiders that a game is dead, but actually has a smallish but fervent community?

I think folks generally make too much of the deadliness of SD (I even did it in response to the "kids game" bit). But I have run a pretty good amount of SD, both in home campaigns and at cons, and while it is deadlier than modern D&D, that isn't really saying much. One thing I do find...

What are you reading in 2025?

Aaaand no. I don't often return a book, especially by an author I know I like, but this one isn't for me.

What are you reading in 2025?

Joe Abercrombie's Devils dropped today and I jumped on the audiobook instantly. Just an hour in I am a little bit concerned that it is going to be too "humorous" for me. The pinnacle of his work, IMO, is The Heroes. That has humor in it, but it is black as pitch. Devils is giving me Suicide...

    Shadowdark General Thread [+]

The project I am working on is intended to be "compatible with" Shadowdark, not an adventure or setting for. This means I can ignore some shadowdark elements. Since the Shadowdark license is not tied to an actual SRD, and the only things you are allowed to reprint are monsters, spells and items...

D&D (2024) Potential other "rules expansion" books

I think the 2024 books put too much emphasis on the multiverse and on running published adventures.

Kids love it when they die totally unfairly! I know SD is simple, but as a parent myself I don't get it's status as the universal new basic set. Those first couple levels are punishing. And while there are fewer options, they are still beyond your average 8 year old I think. But if it works...

D&D (2024) Potential other "rules expansion" books

We know that most GMs create their own worlds and their own adventures. The game should support THAT.

in addition, the full game includes a lot of extra tables and things, making it even easier to run on the fly.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

The special/complete edition sold out. i don't think this is going to be a failure of any sort, lest of all one of that magnitude. I'm not necessarily accusing you of this, but it sure seems like a lot of folks are hoping Daggerheart fails, and I can't figure out why.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

I think it is interesting that they are starting with the dark fantasy game, given DH's more heroic default. I'm excited, though, both to see how the group does with something darker and how Daggerheart plays for them.

D&D (2024) Potential other "rules expansion" books

I know these days are gone, but I preferred it when the majority of the rule books were not tied to any setting, and there were specific lines for the settings. I hate the infusion of the "multiverse" ::gag:: into everything.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

be that as it may, there is no world in which "Baldur's Gate 3" is an answer to "sell me on an underrated CRPG."
