D&D General What Does New Coke Tell Us About Designing for D&D

I was more into Crush myself.

I remembered it wrong as well. They are 110 go in 3e. :)

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

But you are mistaken. :) Clerics got bonus spells for wisdom in 1e and 2e, wizards did not get bonus slots. A 16 wisdom cleric in 2e got two bonus first level spells and two bonus second level spells. They did not get a bonus domain spell though.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Light is an at will cantrip in 5e, that’s it that I can think of. Create water is a 1st level spell in 5e. Create water is a cantrip in 3e but they were not at will in 3e. Everburning torches cost 100 gp, literally the component cost of the third level continual light in 3e. A 1e MU can cast...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Are you arguing that is different in 3e-5e? Wizards can pick their spells in 3e and it gives wizards bonus spells, but mostly it seems the same.

Most of the 3e to 5e negating magic is based on stuff that was there in 1e. Create Water (Alteration) Reversible Level: 1 Components: V, S, M Range: 1” Casting Time: 1 round Duration: Permanent Saving Throw: None Area of Effect: Up to 27 cubic feet Explanation/Description: When the cleric casts...

    Psionics--the Poll!

I was a big fan of the Rolemaster Spell law divide of magic types into arcane, divine, and mentalism(psionics) which narratively worked for me in D&D particularly after 2e with the Complete Psionics book and the Dark Sun setting. Not a fan of 1e psionics, the randomness of getting it and the PC...

    Psionics--the Poll!

I am open to a wide variety of different powers and options in my D&D games. I had a player in my 5e Iron gods campaign take the telekinesis feat, but we flavored it as a spirit moving stuff and not psionics. The last psionic character in a game I ran was a psychic warrior soulknife in my 3.5...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

I am not sure I am understanding you here. D&D has had non level or mildly level-based mechanical stuff that can affect high level characters whether 1e percentage disease exposure or 5e bound accuracy things using the skill system or saves. You seem to be arguing they are not part of the...

D&D General Languages suck in D&D.

I vaguely remember something about D&D elemental terran language being somewhat like that with some vibration based communication component.

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Eh, D&D goes in lots of different directions at the same time that vary by edition and supplemental rules used. 5e has grounded accuracy so a baseline ogre can have a reasonable chance of still hitting high level characters whereas say 3e and 4e with accumulating unbounded bonuses the baseline...

D&D General Favorite Iconic D&D Metropolis

No, Absalom is an island city state near the devil-worshiping coastal nation of Cheliax that has been invaded by big world stomping armies but never fallen. It is a big trade city at the intersection of a couple trade routes. Most famous for the god Aroden raising the artifact Starstone (from...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

It went very smoothly and those edge cases never came up for my character. I mostly mechanically used spells for smites anyway and the maybe once I used an enhance ability spell it was not targeted with a dispel. Sensing evil was my character literally sniffing and saying something like "Hold...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

I think it can. I played a 5e vow of glory paladin as a narratively non-magical warrior who did anime style power strikes instead of divine smiting, his lay on hands and casting enhance ability was warlord style inspiration, and his aura was just that he is so great that being around him makes...

D&D General Favorite Iconic D&D Metropolis

I have used Greyhawk in my 1e/2e longtime AD&D campaign and used the 2e City of Greyhawk boxed set and ran a trilogy of modules and some of the boxed set mini adventures there. You have the option of running nearby mega adventures nearby using the post-Gygax parody 1e Castle Greyhawk, the...

D&D General Favorite Iconic D&D Metropolis

Sort of doubly so. There is the late 1e and then 2e Lankhmar directly but Greyhawk was Gygax's version of taking the Swords & Sorcery novel city and making a D&D version to base adventures out of. Notably both feature politically important thieves and assassin guilds and are big important...

D&D General What Is D&D Generally Bad At That You Wish It Was Better At?

Having enough water on your desert caravan is not a matter of low level versus high level challenge in D&D. It is a matter of whether you have a cleric or druid in the party or not. Create Water is a first level spell that any cleric or druid can prepare after a long rest at level 1. Bards and...
