D&D 5E Reliable Talent. What the what?

If all Reliable Talent does is remove the need for rolling in situations with a more than 50% chance of success, you're just allowing the roll to be predictably confident. As fun as it is when a character says, "Picking a lock? No problem, I'm +8, I got this," and then rolls a 2, that's not a...

Xanathar's, Wizards, and FLGSes Charging For Playspace

scottaroberts, do you mind if I pick your brain a bit on this? We have a store in our neighborhood that I've talked to about providing space for gamers, and I've been wondering what the best way would be to make it really work. Are most of your customers playing organized play style games...

Xanathar's, Wizards, and FLGSes Charging For Playspace

If the customers are there, and it is not losing you money to provide the service, I say good for you! If folks have space to play at home and a reliable player base, that is one thing, but if folks are expecting to play in a public space that is not their home, for free, that's their problem...

[RPG] Gm question: New players dropping from sessions.

It's up to you and your group to decide how long you want to hold the door open for people, and how much you care about consistent attendance. We generally accept that we might have one player who can't make it every night, because life is hectic and we try to play weekly. So if a new player had...

D&D 5E A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

It's also an opportunity for a Ranger to shine by constructing some sort of Swiss Family Robinson hideout. I am just waiting for the players to say, "actually, we're not going down into the dungeon. We're gonna build a treehouse." Though I'm wary about cooking up too many mini-games in advance...

D&D 5E A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Do you still get to take 1 hour short rests normally? Or just the one overnight short rest? I like this, but I could see it breaking down with the Warlock. I also like there being a bonus for sleeping in a safe place vs sleeping out in the wild/dungeon.

D&D 5E Survivor Adventure Paths- TOA ANNIHILATES THE OPPOSITION!

Out of the Abyss 9 Princes of the Apocalypse 12 Rise of Tiamat 12 Tales from the Yawning Portal 13 - 2 = 11 Not an Adventure Path! For Survivor Collections of Existing Standalone Adventures Updated to D&D 5e -> THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE, this is the hands down winner. Tomb of Annihilation 15+1 = 16...

D&D 5E A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Is the problem with 6-8 encounters in a day one of not being able to keep the players from resting too much? Or is it that running medium difficulty encounters isn't fun?

D&D 5E Character sheet: Ability score or modifier in the big box?

I voted neutral because I most certainly don't think there is a right way to do it. When filling in my own character sheets, I put the score in the big box and the mod in the small box, but plenty of folks at the table do the reverse, and when filling out pre-gens for new players, I have put the...

D&D 5E [5E] Frog God Games KS of Tome of Horroes

This. I don't have quite the wall of hardcovers that Matthan does, but I've purchased a good number of FGG products, both print and PDF, and I don't know that there is a single campaign of 5e that I've run that hasn't included some content from one of their products. But until I see some...

D&D 5E [5E] Frog God Games KS of Tome of Horroes

Was there any follow up from FGG or Bill Webb (CEO and owner of Frog God Games) on his sexual harassment of a fellow game designer at PaizoCon this year? Last I heard, Matt Finch had released a statement about "an investigation", but I saw nothing further on any actions taken, or any public...

D&D 5E Do you prefer to fight with melee or ranged weapons?

Most of my characters tend to be envisioned as mobile melee types — sort of a swashbuckly vibe, though I've never used that particular subclass. That being said, in practice, the mobility only seems useful for rogues. For instance, my last character was a barbarian with the Eagle totem, which...

    D&D 5E Fun with Assasins

One possibility would to have the assassin start by picking off NPCs close to the Player Characters. This lets him be introduced as successful and deadly, instead of learning about him through a botched assassination attempt, or giving his location away through carelessness. I'd give him a...

    D&D 5E Challenge with a good group

In my experience, the most consistent way to increase combat difficulty is to increase the number of easy and medium encounters in a day. More encounters trumps harder encounters. Hard (and I mean general definition, not DMG CR definition) encounters are swingy. Players will throw everything...

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

How players divide treasure is up to each group of players! Usually, it's an even split, with items going to whoever seems to get the most use out of it, but if a character gets something before it goes into the "general pool", it's up to them what they do with it. Most groups don't abuse this...

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

We rolled ability scores for my first several D&D 5e games — I'd always felt this was "the right way to do it", as I'd come up from basic and AD&D doing it that way. The result — one character was STACKED, basically giving him one or two free feats over other characters, plus way more hit points...

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

Credit entirely due to aramis erak for coding up that tool. He just gave me the nod in the name because it was based on a conversation we had on these forums a little while back.

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

I think if it's a seasoned group, there should be a lot of merit to this. At the end of the day, a disruptive player can be disruptive with any character, no matter how balanced or munchkined their character. This way, if I want to play the sidekick always getting in over their head, I can do...

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

Ooh, so happy that this method is still getting love! I used this approach to create my all-time favorite 5e character — a halfling fighter with equal Dex and Str, and a low Intelligence and a reasonable charisma. I came in with no character concept whatsoever, and after rolling abilities this...

D&D 5E A Proper Ability Score Generation Preference Poll

I've seen plenty of point buy characters that get rid of the 8. 10, 10, 10, 13, 14, 15. 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15. That's two arrays, both of which keep your power stats at full. So, with a 27-point buy, the 8 isn't a requirement. It's just in the standard array because the standard array is a...
