    D&D 5E Favorite non-WoTC FIFTH EDITION adventures?

In adding to this list, here are all the 4 and 5 star reviews that I could find from MerricB's site: The Gift of the Gnarled one and the Cry of a Daughter Wanted Bloodfang Caves The Mystery of Mordecai's Monster The Friend of the Children The Fey Sister's Fate The Blacksmith's Burden Never Ask...

    D&D 5E Favorite non-WoTC FIFTH EDITION adventures?

There's tons of adventures being written by non-Wizards folks for D&D 5e. It seems that MerricB has already reviewed over 50 of them! I'm curious, if folks were to put together a list of "Best non-WotC Adventures for D&D 5e", which adventures would be on it? The adventures have to be written...

D&D 5E Adventures not Adventure Paths

Never run an AP myself. My longest running single campaign, about 9 months, was primarily a string of pre-published adventures, with homebrew mixed in to create a single unified world with consistent adversaries. From the player's perspective, it probably wasn't any less rail-roady than an AP —...

D&D 5E Short Rests: How many does your group get/take between long rests, on average?

The mechanic that encourages this is wandering monsters/random encounters. Plus monster initiative, which isn't exactly a mechanic, but it's also not too hard for a DM to intuit. There's no hard mechanic in the RAW to force these exact ratios, because they aren't meant to be that rigid — they...

D&D 5E How many combats does your 5e group typically have between long rests, if you have at least one?

I'm not sure that the intended poll of the goal is just to determine xp budgets per day. While fighting 3 owblears at once is harder than fighting 3 owlbears in a row, fighting 3 owlbears in quick succession is harder than fighting 3 owblears with a one minute break in between. As long as...

D&D 5E How do you handle Commoners in your game?

I think we can assume that D&D cults, generally being hostile in nature, include some basic combat training as part of their cultist activities. Cultists probably have knifing and backstabbing drills mixed in with their chanting and sacrificing. While exceptions would abound, your standard...

D&D 5E XP vs Story Line Progression Leveling model in 5th edition

This captures my main preference on leveling as well, as a player and a DM. Before characters level up, I want those characters to have really tested the limit of the features and abilities of their current level. I hate leveling up before a character has truly been challenged at his or her...

D&D 5E How many combats does your 5e group typically have between long rests, if you have at least one?

There's nothing that says the players can't just say, "we wait for several hours and then take a long rest." We don't have to spend table-time tracking every 10-minute turn players spend in the dungeon if they don't plan to do anything specific during that time. Instead, it falls on the DM to...

D&D 5E XP vs Story Line Progression Leveling model in 5th edition

I like gold=xp, so, yes, I don't see xp as attempting to tightly model the amount of dodging, parrying, etc, over the course of an adventure. Ultimately, XP is awarded for overcoming challenges. By the same token, when doing combat xp, I award the same xp for sneaking around an encounter as I do...

D&D 5E XP vs Story Line Progression Leveling model in 5th edition

This is true — as written, there is no "difficulty bonus" awarded to PCs for larger numbers of combatants. This works well for me. First of all, calculating the difficulty bonus could be tedious, as it's not always clear how many enemies will be faced at once at the outset, and how do you...

D&D 5E How dangerous are your wildnernesses?

Much like above, "Moderate" = variable. In my most recent campaign, the wilderness was calibrated to be more dangerous than the low-level adventure sites. Traveling short distances during the day was probably ok, but spending the night in the woods was very unwise for low-level parties. The...

    D&D 5E Which Would You Rather Buy/Use?

I guess B. Maybe C. I just don't see myself (and the group I play with) ever committing to a single year-long adventure path. I also feel a little weird about buying one just so I can pull out one chapter for use in my own campaign. On the other hand, I'd happily buy shorter, well-done...

D&D 5E What is your usual amount of prep?

If it's just the two of them, being a little over-powered isn't the end of the world. A little magic can go a long way, and you might find yourself surprised at how much they can handle, but there's always bigger, badder monsters. That being said, I always think it's smart to start stingy with...

D&D 5E What is your usual amount of prep?

I personally love small parties, because it allows you to do a lot more with individual characters. Obviously, you'll have to adjust your expectations of how durable the party is. I agree with Gilladian's and Bawylie's recommendation to not have two full PCs per player. Have a clear PC for each...

Block / Ignore / Hide a specific thread?

Ha, I'll look into that in Chrome. Was hoping for a nice "out of sight, out of mind" feature, but I realize, if ain't in the code, probably not gonna happen. thanks!

Block / Ignore / Hide a specific thread?

I don't have a particular thread in mind for this (at the moment!), but is there any way to hide a thread so that it doesn't continue to show up on my particular forum listing? Sometimes, I stumble into a blackhole of an argument thread that I just can't extricate myself from, and every time...

D&D 5E Thoughts on the D&D Starter Set (Spoilers!)

I pre-ordered my Starter Set last year, but I've yet to actually be able to run the darn thing! By now, it feels like I'd have a hard time finding a group that isn't already very familiar with the adventure. I've played through (or at least partially through) Cragmaw's Hideout 3 different times...

    D&D 5E How many fans want a 5E Warlord?

Is the only problem with the "battlemaster" as the 5e warlord that it doesn't have a healing ability? I imagine, if I had a group that really wanted to fit that particular aspect of that archetype, I'd just homebrew an "inspiring word" maneuver that used superiority dice to cast a healing word...

[UPDATED] Out of the Abyss Reviews Have Started Rolling In

I'm pretty intimidated by the size and scope of these adventures myself, and I'm curious how much time other DMs have actually put into the prep for them. Did you read the whole adventure before you ran your first session? Did you create lots of auxiliary cheat and reference sheets? Pre-draw...

[UPDATED] Out of the Abyss Reviews Have Started Rolling In

Bryce Lynch over at tenfootpole.org has posted a review as well. http://tenfootpole.org/ironspike/?p=2755 Mr. Lynch has been very critical of the other adventure path books published by Wizards for 5e, so this is probably his most positive review of one of those books to date.
