The Heroic Impulse: Where Have All the Heroes Gone?

Cute, but Mallus has a point. There was nothing any more heroic about characters back in the day than now, so any heroism there was in the game hasn't gone anywhere.

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

Thanks for the link, Vayden. I'm really liking this thread and the other one should be handy too. Hopefully other people find this kind of information useful as well.

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

Thanks for the anecdotes. That's really helpful, and I can see that I'm going to be stealing (with proper attribution, of course) a lot from things which have been posted. Oh, and Vayden - DAMN! Those two bridge fights sound positively epic. Keep 'em coming, please.

What have been your best/worst 4e combat encounters?

After years of DMing 3e/3.5e, I'm going to be running my first 4e session soon. To that end, as the title says, I'm interested in hearing about the best or worst combat encounters that you've experienced in 4e thus far, whether as DM or player. What was particularly memorable about it? What made...

    The Bestiary of Ashtakala

Nice work on the Blooms. While my PCs still can't handle something of that level, I'm likely going to be able to work in the Weeds at some point over the next few sessions. When I do, I'll let you know how it goes.

    What's my (PC's) motivation?

I aim to please :D The nice thing is that even with that kind of a background, Captain (that's actually his first name, so during a short stint in the military he was Private Captain Artichoke) is perfectly functional as a character, mechanically and otherwise, and is in many ways the straight...

Shilsen's Eberron SH (Finished - The Last Word : 9/20/15)

That evening, after nightfall … “So we’re carrying out a cunning plan?” asks Korm, with a mixture of gloom and anticipation, “You know it’ll just fail and they’ll catch us and we’ll have to kill them the old-fashioned way, right?” “Perhaps,” says Six, “But not if Nameless and I are right in...

    What's my (PC's) motivation?

These are the reasons why my current PC and my girlfriend's PC (in the same 4e game) adventure: Hers - Penelope Pindar (human ranger) adventures to escape an inescapable destiny, namely that of turning into a cat lady like her mother was. Plus she has body image issues (she wears a burkha) and...

Shilsen's Eberron SH (Finished - The Last Word : 9/20/15)

Less than a minute later… “So far so good,” rasps Nameless, ignoring a rain of crossbow bolts, a few of which actually seem about to hit him, before veering away an inch from him and shooting back at the unfortunate dolgrims who fired them. The alienist uses his ring to empower a fireball with...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Thanks. And yes, the ending was very intentionally open-ended. As I mentioned above, I did intentionally leave it open-ended, in case I do want to revisit the character and story at some point. Whether that'll happen or not, of course, I don't know right now. Good question. And that reminds...

Shilsen's Eberron SH (Finished - The Last Word : 9/20/15)

As a temporary sop to anyone waiting for an update, I've posted a new bit of fiction to my World's Worst Paladin thread here.

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Well, here's the conclusion to the siege. Enjoy! * * * * * * * * * * Less than fifteen minutes later, Cedric stands in the middle of a giant ring formed by the goblinoids. Everyone from the army who can fit into the fortress to watch has done so, and the thousands who cannot fit inside are...

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

Whoops! Busted :) So be it. I need to stop putting this off, anyway. I'll start writing the conclusion of the siege (and Cedric's fight with Kurgash) this week. Hmm, that's exactly what my girlfriend said when she read what I had so far. And told me that Cedric was a Marty Sue and she...

Shilsen's Eberron SH (Finished - The Last Word : 9/20/15)

Only a few minutes later, the Angels are standing in Central Plateau near the bridge which connects it to Northedge, at a makeshift command post. Accompanying them are Ythana Morr, Balan Cord, members of the Redcloaks and the Royal Guard, and others who were involved with the effort of clearing...

Dragon hoard/ lair in Argonnessen (Eberron)

One could, but this is a quick side adventure because the PCs (and the players) just wanted to have a good old-fashioned fight and some treasure-gathering without having to think about pesky things like plot and talking :) Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'm definitely stealing some of...

Shilsen's Eberron SH (Finished - The Last Word : 9/20/15)

I've started a thread here on the General RPG Discussion board regarding a little dragon hunt that the PCs are involved in. Feel free to drop in and make suggestions. Naturally, the above invitation does not extend to players.

Dragon hoard/ lair in Argonnessen (Eberron)

Hmm. I had been thinking of having an orrery or something related within the lair, but having actual chambers associated with the various planes is an interesting idea. Thanks. I already checked that out, and it gives me a couple of interesting ideas. Absolutely. I was actually planning to...
