I rather think the idea that repelling murderous invaders (an incursion is an invasion, right?) automatically means you are 'Good' highlights the silliness of alignment.

During the last D&D 5E campaign I played, there was a situation where the characters could get into individual pitfights, with the other players betting on the outcome. Rather than run these using the 5E system, our DM boiled them down to glorified Rock/Paper/Scissors (three wins for a victory)...

The wizards in the games I have played were luckily excellent team players and thankfully bore no resemblance to an evil corporate bad guy from an 80's Christmas movie. It is easier to criticize the movie guy rather than the RPG class, though.

I don’t really see any of the examples given as ‘extreme player agency’ in all honesty. The first point - that the player can narrate the impact of mechanics such as HP lose on their character (but not affect the mechanics from what you’ve written?) is pretty standard at the tables I play at...

@Whizbang Dustyboots Thanks for this! Looks very interesting, although I agree with the sentiment that BotW is a better fit for D&D than Ghibli. Maybe it’s more an aesthetic? That said, stuff like Princess Mononoke and Nausica would work, with a strong tradition/nature vs progress/technology...

It is a real problem running RPGs in my neck of the woods. Everyone tries to play different races, but we just all get stuck playing dwarves every time. No matter what we do, as soon as we start talking in character- bam! Instantly we’re dwarves. Weird.

It is a mark of this show’s quality - particularly its characters - that it can follow a fairly lighthearted crossover with a harrowing look at the effects of war without skipping a beat. Excellent stuff, really enjoying this.
