D&D General How would you use Carrion Crawlers meaningfully?

My advice would be to reskin them entirely. On paper, a carrion crawler is a horrifying opponent, with the ability to paralyse and squirm along the ceilings in pursuit. The problem lies with quantifying them as an entry in a Monster Manual - something constrained by CR and an expected level...

Which of these six is the best H.P. Lovecraft story?

Of the options given, The Shadow over Innesmouth is the most complete Lovecraft experience. It’s creepy, desolate and upsetting. The Dunwich Horror is good, but a bit creaky in places. My favourite story - by a country mile - is one not on this list: The Colour Out of Space. Brilliant stuff!

    D&D (2024) Smite Changes

I don’t understand why Smite isn’t a reaction. Make the spell smites reactions, too. It seems to perfectly represent the whole ‘when this happens, you do this’ schtick of using a reaction. Bonus action feels a bit awkward, but free action smiting is maybe too much.

Cubicle 7 Is #192 on the FT 1000 List of Europe's Fastest Growing Companies

Very glad to hear they are doing well. I didn't back Broken Weave in the end - I will be buying it - but WFRP 4E has been a joyful return to form for the system and hopefully the way towards even bigger and better things.

    WotC Bring back Thunder Rift!

I’ve only heard of the setting in passing, due to an attempt on the Vaults of Pandius to mix it in with the similar valley that was the location for the Warriors of the Eternal Sun game on the Sega Megadrive (which was itself set in Hollow World). I love a self contained bottle setting, though...

Broken Weave: An Interview With Cubicle 7 Games’ Elaine Lithgow

I am highly interested in this. As a few have mentioned, the ‘shining in the darkness’ is so much more interesting - to me - than yet another doomed world full of doomed people looking to murder each other at the drop of a hat. I hope a few previews turn up soon.

D&D General The Fate of Bargle

Sir Horatio of Cane, Knight Investigator: “It looks like she got more than she… Bargled for.” Aaaaooooooow!!! Anyway, Bargle is found not guilty by virtue of Teleport, suckers!

    D&D General #Dungeon23

I got bored of dungeons, but quite liked the productivity of doing something every day so I have started fleshing out a potential setting - one region per week because I like broad strokes so players can fill in the details. This week, I have been mostly writing this: The Iron Duchy of Sartor...

How to deal with a "true roleplayer".

Hiding behind the shield of ‘It’s just what my character would do’ falls apart when you remember that the person that decides ‘what the character would do’ is the person playing them. If what ‘your character would do’ is act like an ass and spoil other people’s enjoyment, play a better character.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Revechol was, I believe, originally the setting for the developer’s home RPG (possibly even D&D). DE is a tremendously funny, deeply sad and cathartic experience - vast and oceanic, like my soul. I would buy the tabletop setting in a heartbeat.

D&D 5E Comprehend Languages Saves Lives

Comprehend Languages is one of my 'always takes' as a player, and sees a lot of play at the tables I play at. Suddenly a combat encounter can be a social encounter, or an ancient unknowable text can be deciphered (and I love the visual of having the caster have to touch the text as they read...

D&D 5E D&D Beyond Reveals New Golden Vault Details

Absolutely. I enjoy heists in Blades because it is like a heist movie. It's fast and fun, without the choice paralysis and endless strategising that seems to plague planning in D&D. Blades is the sort of heist I want to play, and honestly if a real life heist is anything like planning one in D&D...

D&D 5E D&D Beyond Reveals New Golden Vault Details

I am torn - heists are exactly the sort of RPG I love... which is why I play Blades in the Dark, and I don't know if D&D is going to be better at doing heists than the game-that-is-made-for-heists. The demo adventure is interesting and clearly has some thought put into it, and I like the premise...

Couldn’t work Love into my plan so I just did a doomed wedding. What’s happened is a bit vague, but my version is a wizard did it. Wizards are usually to blame, to be fair.

What's the problem with five room dungeons?

This is surely a case of the blogosphere eating itself, or being controversial for clicks. Five room dungeons are a versatile staple, and I've never heard anyone say otherwise. And a seven room dungeon? Luxury!

I’m doing decks on a spaceship/Spelljammer rather than one megadungeon. The plan is eventually I can just slot them all together or just use them when I feel like it. Anyway, week 3 done! (I know I got east and west mixed up - my excuse is it’s non-Euclidean or something)

D&D (2024) Change in Charisma Description

If Charisma determines beauty, then Intelligence determines whether or not you wear glasses. The two have about as much relevance to one another.

D&D 5E Rolling Stone talks to Surena Marie and Ajit George about Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel and diversity in gaming.

I’m putting it in ‘space’ (the Astral plane) and adding in all the Spelljammer content. Essentially it will be a settlement akin to the Rock of Bral in my universe. When I get round to actually creating that universe, of course!
