How much should the GM talk during a session?

Ironically, this is itself a good answer - understanding that it varies from session to session is a good mindset to be in. I don't think there is a single 'correct' ratio, but rather I wanted to get a feel what ratios might be depending on game an preference. I think I would find this...

How much should the GM talk during a session?

Having played in a number of fairly different styles of game, I was wondering what people considered the 'optimal' amount of time that the GM should be talking during a session. Obviously the amount will vary from game to game and system to system, but overall what do you consider a healthy...

Help me "get" Forged in the Dark.

Pretty much. There is a strong element of negotiation between player and GM throughout - a player can take stress to improve their effect or the number of dice they roll, or take a ‘devil’s bargain’ to boost their chances in exchange for a complication (‘The lock is old and rusty, but so is the...

D&D 5E Radiant Citadel Free Preview On D&D Beyond

Yes, I suspect it is mining that same vein of fiction rather than actively copying or inspired by it. It doesn’t feel quite as political or ‘grubby’ as Babylon 5, in my mind, but it certainly could be taken in that direction.

D&D 5E Radiant Citadel Free Preview On D&D Beyond

I am getting a strong Mass Effect vibe off this. Mysterious fortress city crafted by absent elders and inhabited by a melting pot of different cultures, with something horrible lurking just beyond the horizon. You assume the society is as benevolent as it appears, but maybe there’s something...

D&D General Monsters you love to hate, and monsters you hate to love.

My favourite ‘monsters’ are bandits/pirates, simply because of the vast variety of tactics and variations you can put into a raiding party. That said, I also like leucrottas, froghemoths, weird beholder variants and bodaks because they all have interesting mechanics beyond multiattack and some...

D&D 5E Vs Vecna battle simulations.

I'd also say that he should have realised that Malek doesn't have multiple attacks, so he is better not using his reaction when hit by Malek when he could make the monk cry by zipping away and denying him his flurry. Or just focusing down Egar the irritating reaction caster. (Vecna prepares an...

D&D 5E Vs Vecna battle simulations.

I don't think any of that applies here - other than getting advantage. A rogue is absolutely balanced around getting sneak attack each round - not being able to hide or getting advantage every round. But if the rogue's companions aren't taking the hits to allow the rogue to get that sneak attack...

    Scum and Villainy (FitD)

A lot of people that you know (or are of a social class you ken)? Consort. One person that you need to convince? Sway.

D&D 5E Vs Vecna battle simulations.

Skulker has no effect on whether he can see you or not. I'm not sure what camoflage is - could you explain? As soon as you step into his line of sight, he can see you. You aren't invisible, after all, and he literally saw you duck behind a pillar. I appreciate that you might rule that you have...

D&D General Die Vecna Die! Did anyone run this adventure?

I stumbled onto it in later years, hoping it would tie together all my favourite things (Ravenloft, Planescape, Vecna, the L*dy). It did indeed - by the throat, and then it hung them. Suffice to say, I am not a fan.

D&D Celebrity Satine Phoenix & Husband Jamison Stone Accused Of Abuse Towards Freelancers

Absolutely, I quite agree. And I hope I didn’t seem to imply that you were saying otherwise!

D&D Celebrity Satine Phoenix & Husband Jamison Stone Accused Of Abuse Towards Freelancers

I was thinking this exact thing. Which is why I never use that word around people who hate it, even though it’s used more like a form of punctuation than a real word where I live…

D&D Celebrity Satine Phoenix & Husband Jamison Stone Accused Of Abuse Towards Freelancers

Sure, but once you learnt it was something really nasty, and applied to people as a way of mocking disability, you’re not going to use it just to antagonise someone, are you? Costs nowt to be considerate, after all. 🙂

D&D Celebrity Satine Phoenix & Husband Jamison Stone Accused Of Abuse Towards Freelancers

No, it was very definitely a slur against people with learning disabilities - at least where I grew up in the UK. And it lasted all the way through the 90s too. Repellent stuff.

D&D 5E New Spellcasting Blocks for Monsters --- Why?!

Strangely, I feel the opposite here - it shows how far the characters have come that the monstrous creatures they fled from at level 1 are now no match for them at level 10. The verisimilitude comes from the fact that their increased prowess is reflected by the world itself.

D&D 5E Get The Vecna Dossier Free At D&D Beyond

ENWorld: "Are you a god?" Vecna: "... No?" ENWorld: "Then.... DIIIIIE!" I like this version of a pre-ascension Vecna. It is a fun statblock with some quirky powers to make an interesting fight. Sure, it isn't a behemoth with 30 in all stats, immunity to damage and at will Wish, but who wants to...

D&D 5E Which common monsters/creature types do you exclude from your campaigns?

It occurs to me I have never run anything with orcs as an enemy army. I just don’t find them appealing - they probably skew too close to LotR style fantasy for my taste. I’ve had orc bandits and orc pirates, but never orcs-as-a-horde.

D&D General What do you think of the dubious Morales of this crime gang I made using tables A Mate made that saves the lives of babies via highly illegal means?

I think you are looking for someone to rubber stamp your idea as morally sound. Politely, in my estimation, it is not. This isn’t Robin Hood. It’s the kidnapping of children, without consent, and it is ghastly.
