D&D 5E When Players Are Indecisive

You describe frightening criminals and PCs are acting with caution. Seem right? The PCs try to conceal themselves but the DM seem ready to send an assassination squad. Maybe players fear harsh consequence of any errors they could make?

D&D (2024) They need to bring back Gather Information in One DnD.

using an ability check Int, Cha or Wis depending on the information need and the context is quite enough. most of the time adding proficiency if trained in Investigation will be fine.

D&D General An Algorithm for DMs in Combat

Why not simply call the shot of monster next move. Depending on monster type you may inform different PCs Or ask for a check. for a basic system I would use establish Motivations for a Fight Food any kind. Specific food : blood, flesh, …. Gold Equipment guarding protecting Pleasure of...

In a RPG any challenge succeed by the players is fake.

D&D (2024) With Weapon Mastery likely making it in, do you want optional exotic weapons and exotic weapon masteries?

Returning weapon are magical. Go see some boomerang throwing on utubes, you will see that throwing a boomerang in a dungeon is pure fantasy and magic. But I agree to more mastery. Don’t need exotic weapon to add them.

D&D (2024) We have Arcane, Divine, and Primal lists now. Why not Psionic?

Fantasy psionic can do anything. So we need a spell list with all the spells! Unfortunately psionic fans want psionic not a spell list like other casters.

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

I find Gygax very pragmatic in his depiction of the game. His multiple warning usually make sense. House rule is not a magic solution, most of the time it’s only a trade off. And the more you house rule, the more you may paint yourself in an isolated corner. Power hungry players still exist, and...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

I read again the foreword and first Pages of 1ed DMG. what I see there is an invitation to enter into an experience of imagination, fantasy, creativity. Gygax describe his process to handle the game like an amazing discovery and try to communicate it and invite other DM to join the hobby. At...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

I don’t follow CR at all, but I knew there been some PCs death. It spread like an important new, a kind of national drama! Dying is less view like a failure, but a part of a bigger show.

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

My view on lethality for editions. 1ed. Vietnam war. The DM is the sergent, the players the recruits in a Boot Camp. reference movie: Full metal jacket. 3ed. The players have at last access to the rules. The key to survive was the rules mastery, and often the fierce fight was not against...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

That time was pretty much schizophrenic. Post Vietnam war, post Peace and Love, on the edge of the first oil crisis. Can we be a hero? Maybe the answer was not so obvious at this time.

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

There is also the method V in the unheated Arcana, which was very very strong. In this book there is also a rule to allow minimum hit point at first level. Officially it is Advanced DnD. Method V This method can only be used to create human player characters. It gives the player an...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

On the lethality of 1ed I remember some details. We use the -10 hit points for death. I didn’t know it was a house rule at the time. Our character have one score within 15,16,17,18 range, so it was a better method than roll 3d6 and place in order. But what I remember most, it is that to...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

I take a look into the 1ed DM guide. Now and then a player will die through no fault of his own. He or she will have done everything correctly, taken every reasonable precaution, but still the freakish roll of the dice will kill the character. In the long run you should let such things...

D&D General Lethality, AD&D, and 5e: Looking Back at the Deadliest Edition

It‘s amazing that in all those editions I never read specific hints or rules to adjust the lethality of the game. We have some variant for resting in the DM 5ed, but no words on lethality. Maybe it‘s a taboo subject.
