Remembering Nexus: A Bridge Between History & Adventure

In the late 70s and early 80s there were a large number of magazines running around that talked about gaming in general and role playing games in particular. Of course most people are familiar with Dragon Magazine or the early White Dwarf, but I wonder how many remember the gem from Task Force...

    May DMs Guild Roundup

Summer is almost here and that means the campaign season is among us. It is a time to prepare yourself for the coming trials that warm weather brings. In the pile of moldy tomes we have wrested from the hoards of dragons and eldritch fiends are three in particular that you may find of interest...

Lost In Translation: Adapting Fictional Characters To Games

I suspect (as always) system matters a great deal. How you might model Belgareth in D&D is different than say how you might in Rolemaster or FATE. The notable exceptions, even though systems vary wildly, is super heroes. I think the old Marvel Super Heroes did a pretty decent job of modeling...

Lost In Translation: Adapting Fictional Characters To Games

Interestingly, 1st edition Stormbringer has a small section on playing Elric, which I thought was interesting. As a player it never occurred to me to want to be the fictional character, constrained by their actions and motivations. But I guess there was a desire among some groups to do just that.

Love the summary. I do not always catch the whole episode, so this fills in gaps.

    The March DMs Guild Roundup

The grizzled warrior sitting across from me squinted at me with his one good eye, I assume trying to size me up with his intuition. "Are you calling me a fossil?" The scars on his arms leered at me, looking as if their very history would reach out any moment and strike me. "Uh, no. I was asking...

Check Out The Scene At Atlanta's AndoCon

JordanCon is coming up in April. It is a Literary con and not strictly gaming but there is gaming and it is an aspect we are trying to grow some. Also in the ATL. (I am the SF Track director for it).

Worlds of Design: How Would You Design For Spelljammer?

So I was thinking about Spelljammer recently. I intend to do a live game stream using it and the Realms. But if I were going to design it for 5e, these are the basic changes I would make * Give it a fresh coat of paint that is reminiscent of Farscape. A Henson make over, not with puppets per...

The Journey To...North America, Part Two

The purpose of the Journey to... articles is really three fold 1. To open up players to potentially other cultures and mythologies for their play 2. To encourage research and respect of those cultures 3. To suggest that in embracing different world views, it might also change the dynamics of how...

The Journey To...North America, Part Two

In writing these articles I have come to understand how many people are voiceless in the collective imaginary land that is role playing games. I hope that these articles make our hobby and industry a place where more people are welcomed and encouraged to become involved. Which brings me to North...

Travel Through The Mists Of Akuma And Into New Worlds For D&D 5E

That was a goof on my part. I missed talking about Dignity and Haitoku even though they were in my notes and I never went back to change that part. Good catch! The two play off of one another, but IMO are not exactly opposites. Dignity measures your ability to carry out your duties and Haitoku...

Sean's Picks of the Week (0319-0323) - Tales of the Five Editions Week!

Ah good times. I remember the one time I walked into a cave in Curse, somewhere in the Moonsea region, and when the screen was done loading about 50 beholders were all siting there waiting for me. Good times. I feel like I may be the only person to think Red Hand of Doom was really mediocre, no...

Mists of Akuma may be the Meiji – Punk post-apocalypse RPG setting you never knew that you needed. The game enlists your character in the tragic tale that is Soburin, offering a dizzying array of possible cultural hooks to embrace. Just perusing the setting material can fill an afternoon...

Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
