I must admit I really are "in to" the shield-build. But a cleric, hmm... I could ofc' make a magic domain cleric to gain acces to Spectral Hand. Buy a Tower Shield and let my Spectral hand deliever my Conflict/heal Touch spells while I "Cover." Then I could make the other domain Animal and wait...
