Some mechanisms (often ported from the old days) are putting the incentives in the wrong place - blog post discussion

My take on Encumberance in particular is that it fails because its too often noninteractive, or at least practically so, with what little interactivity existing being so anemic it may as well not be there. If you then compound that with the fiddly math Encumberance often takes the form of, its...

    (+)Theorycrafting: Systemic Cultures and Questing

Recently I've been doing some considerable overhauls of what I've been working on, and I ended up going down a design rabbit hole of sorts, if the name of this topic doesn't make that obvious. This topic is going to go into this idea and where I think its going to go, as it is theorycrafting...

    (+) Theorycrafting Crafting (and Gathering)

Something occurs to me that I feel tends to be lost when I talk about my game is that theres a lot of nuance to how its being designed. This is something a work friend led me to after talking about what I was doing. For example, the subject of this topic is Crafting, and a touchy subject tends...

    (+) Theorycrafting Crafting (and Gathering)

Ah so in that case, closed. Materials would have specific instances where they could be used; ie, leather can be the sole material in a piece of armor but would be nonsensical as a weapon. And as far as things not considered Materials, most of the time it will be things you could only get...

They could, particularly if their overall build affords them a way to not need to train up the related Skills, such as the Warrior subclass Commander allowing for Intelligence to sub in for Stamina over either Strength or Agility, which in turn means they don't need to maximize one of those...

    (+) Theorycrafting Crafting (and Gathering)

So I'm making this a plus topic, as I just don't have any desire to see the sheer vitriol these kinds of mechanics tend to elicit out of certain people. But anyway, lately I've been thinking through the theory I've been developing for what will become the overall Crafting and Gathering...

Well given they used movies, Ill use one too. Iron Man 3 when Stark has to build some gadgets when his suit is out of commission. I can't imagine anyone saying that movie doesnt fall squarely under the Heroic label, and as I related, the scenes of him crafting his gadgets are just right for the...

At this point though we have to move past vague assumptions and be more concrete; in the LOTR example, for instance, I'm not suggesting that Smithing needs to be a core part of the gameplay loop, or necessitated for progression, or anything like that. It should be integrated, meaning if you do...

Its not a zero sum, and this speaks to why innovation in these kinds of areas is important, and why I brought up TLOU as an example done right. The logic that these mechanics merely existing is problematic doesn't follow from any seeming criteria other than not liking all those other...

Words mean things, and bespoke definitions will induce cognitive dissonances, especially when they're being applied to very ephemeral things. Heroic necessarily implies heroism, and heroism has nothing to do with whether or not the game has pooping mechanics, to be hyperbolic. But ultimately...

They're doing memes for their fellow kids. Ie, a shallow invocation of the "hype train" to entice someone's impulses. It also serves as an engagement meter; presumably all it is is tracking whose backed in a certain time period.

Engaging with a concept is not the same thing as agreeing with you. In other words, that I disagree doesn't mean I'm not engaging the subject. You should check again. I never said the word "major" nor implied it. The jump from what I actually said, "smithing could be a part of the game"...

Which as argued I don't believe has anything to do with any notion of "heroic". This has already been gone over why are we restarting the argument

This doesn't follow from multiple explicit statements to the contrary; specifically to the tune of "this game is probably going to be fun" and "this game actually does a lot of the same things my own system does" Honestly at this point its starting to come off like you and others are...

Thing is thats not really something you can bake into the mechanics. I can be heroic, per that definition, in pretty much every system ever. And I go by what was written under the heading "Heroic" in the preview pages; it includes this definition, but it spends most of the page space on...

The crux of the issue wasn't what the game does though, just a bit of what is basically marketing. Essentially, "heroic" is superflous when what it refers to is covered by "cinematic". None of that has any bearing on the game though; nothings lost by the absence of the "heroic" descriptor.

This what I was talking about in referring to interactivity. Games are about doing the things being depicted, not merely watching them be done. That neccessitates a stronger focus on things that'd be superflous in most films. Should be noted though, film isn't exactly that monolithic on this...

That depends on how it manifests. Planning and Prep doesn't have to be tedium. Plus, I'd make the case that theres bit of overstating of how prominent these elements have to be to "count" as it were. These elements contribute to a greater whole; they really shouldn't be so disproportionately...

I didn't call it petty for nothing lol. From my view the actual game itself is fine. Its actually astonishingly similar to my own in a lot of ways, so for me nothing about the game itself is an issue. What tickled my buttons was just the blurbs, and I've given my 2 cents on that subject. Has...

I could see the concern. If a VTT is being assumed it can make it easy to accept design solutions that would make physical play inefficient. That was part of the issue with 4e. It isn't nearly as bad at the table as its detractors would have you believe (especially with the fixed HP values)...
