MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

...yes. I think you're getting a little too caught up in the fact that I offerred critique and not enough in the fact that Ive stated multiple times I don't have an issue with the game itself. Especially considering you're asserting that I'm not engaging their definitions when I'm pretty...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

I don't take issue with 4e with the serial numbers filed off 🤷‍♂️ As it stands if the game released as is I wouldn't have any issues playing it. We're just talking about petty peripherals to that that I don't believe tracks with their intentions; marketing that I don't think is really accurate...

How Crunchy is Too Crunchy, For You Personally

For running it physical, you can go to places like purple sorcerer and get spellbook printouts that consolidate and compress spells down into a more easily referenced packet. Its still a lot of table referencing (kind of unavoidable with how their magic system works), but its a lot more...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

Thats fair, and from my reading I don't believe any wires got crossed. If I cared to go into the backerkit page and read it first I'd have had the same thought when I got to the relevant parts. I don't think that was Shadowdarks fault. Could have been an adventure design issue, though without...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

That is what I'm using it as, and is central to why that lightly pushed a button. I didn't really want to open up another can of worms on the subject of genre emulation but I may as well note that I don't consider their reasoning (as listed where Heroic is defined relative to them) to be all...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

Chiming in because this tickled my argument buttons, but it can also be because your game is about being heroic that you have to face those sorts of challenges. Its not so cut and dry that having high powered characters means X, Y, or Z has to fall by the wayside. I suppose its mostly a...

Mechanics that support what you want as a Player to feel like you matter

I'd say its about equal between both. Mechanics affect the immediate feel of different actions but the GM/writer/both can compound that feel either way it goes, and indeed can even intervene to circumvent bad feel, but that introduces other issues particularly of the "my actions don't matter" kind.

Mechanics that support what you want as a Player to feel like you matter

I squared that circle by breaking the conventional wisdom that a dice roll shouldn't be dwarfed by a modifier. Specifically, a base max of +30 to a 1d20 roll. This does a lot of things, but first and foremost is accurately portray competance as a result of increasing your Talents. You clearly...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Its something I've been considering in particular as I start pondering certain aspects of my own game. One avenue for a fundamentally interesting "true death" is the idea of families and legacies. I think part of the overall "Bloodline" mechanics in my game, my take on "Race", is going to end...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

I think its a common saying that death is typically the least interesting outcome. I think that tends to stem from death being more or less a break in the gameplay loop rather than just another part of it. Games that do the souls-like thing of making death a part of the loop, as well as games...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Video game RPGs (ie, the ones that are actually copying the same sort of loops TTRPGs use) are overwhelmingly elaborating on the original experience, or, as is the case with your 3.x DND heritage, making it more easily playable. The suggestion that they're 1:1 copies is disingenous at best...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

As an aside, there's something to be said for this idea that I find being disagreed with "intolerable". I don't really care if one agrees with me or not, but if one is going to go through most and respond to the thoughts therein, I am going to do them the respect of doing so in kind. in doing...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

It is fascinating that one can read me saying pretty explicitly that I want people to actually talk to me and not at me and will just not register it, and instead invent alternative facts about what a person thinks. Case in point. Is it really so intolerable to you that I feel the opinions I...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Those three don't have the same loops. Theres an identical heritage between them obviously, but one is a specific tactical combat oriented game, and the other two are two of the main ones that get copy/pasted ad nauseum. Which isn't the intent. The intent is we're attempting to have a...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

The thing is is that I'd hope if one is seeking to discuss theory that they, in turn, are willing to then accept a more objective discourse. Its not lost on me that improv has baggage as a term, but I can also put that aside and focus on whats actually being said through the word, and not what...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I think something OC/neo-trad games or whatever we want to call them could stand to do is recontextualizing what it means to progress away from character capabilities. The reason being that for people who want to play a character concept (rather than define them through playing), theres an...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I didn't say you have an animosity towards improv. I said you clearly don't like the implication of improv being related to improv theater. (Which you clearly don't like) Thats very much like saying stir-frying is appropriating from deep frying. And more to the point, it glosses over what...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

An additional thought to this re: improv. An easy way to grok the idea is to consider the idea that many believe that less rules means its easier to roleplay. When you think about why that is, it becomes a very poignant answer to point to it as an improv problem, where rules are considered to...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Thats pretty prejudicial, not to mention inaccurate to what I'm saying. English is a cruddy language but I'd hope we could recognize that just because the word "improv" has implications you don't like doesn't mean whats being said is wrong. This suggests to me that you're letting your disdain...

How Crunchy is Too Crunchy, For You Personally

I care more about fun and efficiency. Complexity and/or crunch are entirely irrelevant to those qualifiers. In a lot of ways, its the difference between hopping into a plane in a Battlefield game, playing DCS with a Keyboard, and playing DCS with a basic HOTAS setup. All three are ostensibly...
