D&D 5E (2014) What playable race would make the worst/oddest Monk?

I played a tiefling shadow monk. It was fun. Spamming darkness without spending ki, hellish rebuke, darkvision, fire resistance (my friend was a light cleric...). Good times. :) Also I always saw the bonuses not for the "main" ability as an opportunity instead as a hindrance. It results in a...

So you're actually suggesting that a lack of diversity is a good thing? Well, I guess the whole commercialist/for the masses mindset is just alien to me. I'm still on the side that commercial success is not the be-all-end-all. Because when you're wanting to appeal to the biggest possible market...

I'm glad we smoothed it out. :) How CoS is Ravenloft, or not is depends on who are you asking, I suspect, for the majority of RL fans it is not, or at least non-canon. Otherwise, i agree they probably don't have the manpower to do a lot more, that's why I'm suggesting something like the MtG...

And I think there's a misunderstanding. When speaking about "content" my least problem is the crunch. Yes I want more options, because there's a lot of concepts I'd like to see, but if the "first big mechanical expansion" will have a good plethora of crunch, I'm okay with the slow release...

And incidentaly I'm thinking more and more about going back to PF. However I don't think saying "this game isn't for you", when it could be with a little effort is good politics. I don't have problems with the slow release cycle. I'm not saying they should churn out a big splat hardcover and a...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

Ah, I knew this will be coming! :D The problem is, D&D, unlike games as WoD and CoC isn't backward-compatible with it's earlier iterations. Between editions everything changed. The rules changed, the classes changed, the monsters changed, even the lore changed. Converting to 5e is easier, but...

The difference is: I'm interested in D&D. I don't care about what Madonna does, because I' not interested in her music. I like D&D, i think 5e is a good system, so i think it's understandable that I and other people voicing our opinion of how the game could do better. Because we want this game...

I think nobody claimed that they aren't successful financially. However, as it got mentioned, part of it is the recent cultural environment. Also those numbers are all show just a part of the truth. For example, the VTTs are skewed toward d20 games. And frankly, looking at the number of how...

A license means the material the licensee puts out IS official, because WotC acknowledges it as such. If you make some FR material and I make some too then bot of us puts them out in DMsG, neither is official. WotC just allowed us to make fan-fiction and publish it on their platform. For...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

Yes, but DMsG isn't official. When WW-Arthaus did Ravenloft, that was official, that was RL during 3e. As things stand, there is multiple RL conversions on DMsG and neither of them is official. That they provided a platform, for basically fan-fiction (I'm not being condescending, it's not a...

D&D 5E (2014) Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide Neverwinter description mostly useless

I agree that the SCAG is not a good GM resource. It's a quick tour around the Sword Coast, but it focuses on what the everyday man would know and see and the current politics, but it has very little actual adventure hooks, places to discover, rumors and deeper political machinations. In other...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

A couple of things: - If you want to play every AP and you like them, then yes there's a lot of material, because they are somehow able to churn out 2 of them every year. If you want to play anything else, then, no, there's very little material. - The corebooks are already had more than enough...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

I suspect that is because 5e's system is designed to appeal to the broadest spectrum of fans, so many old-timers are returning, because it feels more like what they loved. Also it is easy to homebrew for 5e, so those who doesn't have any interest in the old settings don't have problems here...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

I think the best way would be something in the middle. Slow, controlled, but steady expansion over time with big, shiny summing-up books when enough content gathered to do one. Give the dedicated fans smaller quantities of material over time to maintain their interests, while primarily focusing...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

That's understandable, but I think it'd be better to do it in smaller quantities over time, but steadily. If I have to wait another 5 years for the material I want to see, well, I'll be over playing other games and spend my money at other companies. What about this: publish setting/insert what...

As I said their strategy is good for bring in new people yes. But that's not, or shouldn't be the sole and only goal. The game should have more retention factor and at least some interesting material for people who don't want the generic default game. It could be done with a very minimal effort...

D&D 5E (2014) I think the era of 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons had it right. (not talking about the rules).

Not a problem! :) I'm pretty much agreeing with you. The thing I wanted to reflect is that people here generally find objections of why WotC doesn't or shouldn't make specific type of products and there is an excuse for every product type. I just wanted to say that there is just as much reason...

Something like that. The simpler rules are certainly helping to make it more easy to access for newcomers. It's just easier to get non-gamer people to play something simpler, because they are here for the story and the experience of gaming. However, while 5e is simpler than 3e/PF I think...

Oh, I agree with that completely. You could do crunch without short-time bloat, you could do settings without the setting bloat of 2e, etc. I agree WotC now somewhat struggle to find the medium ground. It depends. If your target audience is the most casual and new gamer, it could work. I saw...
