    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Equivalent exchange: Feats are no longer an optional rule, but custom backgrounds are. Perfectly balanced.

    Looking for D&D-like alternatives to D&D 5e

This matches my experience as well with 5e. Fights in PF2 or OSR games like OSE/Shadowdark are significantly faster - even when the party is composed of the exact same players!

D&D General Defining "New School" Play (+)

I fully agree with this. New School games are specifically D&D 3.0+3.5, and those games directly descended from and/or inspired by them: 4e, 5e, pathfinder, PF2E, 13th Age. Additionally, other games directly derived from the d20 system that aren't necessarily d&d: d20 modern, mutants and...

Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

From my experience - PF2 combats are consistently faster than 3.X or 5e combats. The average length of encounters also only slightly increases as the party levels up - we were running level 12 combats without issue and in comparable amounts of time as when the party was low level.

    Question about OSE's box sets

All Advanced classes All Advanced Spells (illusionist, druid) All Advanced Alternate rules (Magic user prep, Race+Class, Etc.)

OSR This tells me OSR is alive and well.

I'd really like to see more mid and high level stuff for B/X in modern osr. Everything seems to be written under the assumption the party is level 1, dies in a single hit, and has no money. Even hexcrawls, which as supposed to be Expert level adventuring, are frequently published for levels...

    Question about OSE's box sets

No, it does not. Classic Box + Advanced Box or Classic Tome + Advanced Box give you everything. Classic Box + Advanced Tome does not.

    Looking for D&D-like alternatives to D&D 5e

For Crunchy, Tactical, and Plays Fast you could look into Mythras or similar BRP derived games. For Crunchy, Tactical, and On a Grid you could look into Pathfinder 2e or 4e d&d. For Tactical, On a Grid, and Plays Fast you could look into Basic D&D or other OSR retroclones. You cannot and will...

Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

Drained reduces max HP and can last multiple days after being inflicted. ex: Yellow Mold - Hazards - Archives of Nethys: Pathfinder 2nd Edition Database Various afflictions can cause enfeebled, clumsy, etc can similarly last multiple days. These cannot be removed without a 3rd rank spell...

Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

This matches my experience with all 3 different parties I've run pf2 for.

Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

Additional played experience - I have had two PC deaths in my campaigns - one due to critical hit massive damage and a second due to persistent damage. Neither are things that Hero Points can help much with. I have had 2 other instances where critical hits could have caused instant death due...

Pathfinder 2E I think I am giving up on PF2ER

Agree. I've also done the opposite: Running a PF1 adventure (RotRL) and converting it to PF2. No significant issues.

D&D 5E (2014) Which PC would you Haste?

Haste doesn't let you use Multiattack.

OSR This tells me OSR is alive and well.

I imagine this is since the 3 big B/X retroclones - Basic Fantasy, LotFP, and Lab. Lord all bolted on a more detailed encumbrance system to the B/X chassis. Nobody played with the "real" encumbrance rules until OSE released them unmodified.

OSR This tells me OSR is alive and well.

Same. As an example, at a FLGS rpg event near me, the 5e table had 6 players and the indie game table had 2. No one was interested in switching tables.

Not rolling dice is really the worst part of it for me.

Oh absolutely, I won't fight you on that.

There's few places on the internet more insufferable than the r/osr subreddit.

Only option I can think of which fits into this category is Cypher system, or MAYBE the x Without Number books.
