    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

Yes, I was looking at the 8th-level Divine Strike feature which allows the player to add poison damage to a hit on each of the Trickery cleric's turns and was thinking it could be described not as an underhanded "trick" done surreptitiously, as it could be for a cleric of Melkor, but as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

For me, Arcana, as the domain of pure magic, would be associated with the Music of the Ainur, the original "spell" the effect of which was to create the World, and the Valar associated with that domain would be those who had the chiefest parts in the Music and are described as strong singers or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

Thanks for pointing this out. It kind of bugged me too. I had thought somewhat about Ulmo in exactly the respect you mention until I ran across this write-up on tolkiengateway.net: Even while the Valar were secluded in Valinor or when the Children were under the wrath of his brethren, Ulmo...

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

I didn't realize there was a cleric subclass in SCAG so didn't think of including Arcana. I generally like to limit player options in my games to the books listed in the OP plus EEPC, but if a player wanted to use something from SCAG, I'd be fine with it. I included Knowledge in Varda's...

    Should PCs Be Exceptional?

It depends entirely on the game being played at that particular table at that particular time.

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Right now it looks like I'll be unable to post regularly from the 21st to the 29th of June, but apart from that, I'm in. It sounds like a fun way to learn the new system.

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

This is an excellent point. Tempest is the other domain I was considering for him that I cut along with Forge. The full list was Death, Forge, Knowledge, Tempest, Trickery, and War. (I also considered giving Tempest to Oromë because of his terrible wrath.) I removed Forge because I couldn't see...

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

That's one of the domains I'd assigned but cut for him because the domain is very focused on actual metal forging, and we just don't see Melkor doing all that much forging himself onscreen. That was more Sauron's thing, I guess. However, Aulë and Melkor are described as being similar, and it's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Domains of the Valar

Keeping in mind that cleric domains are for describing clerics, rather than their deities who are complex individuals whose personalities cannot be captured with just a few descriptor words, I would like to present to you, dear ENWorlders, a list of suggested domains for the Valar. For this...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

Change Shape (I'm looking at the 5.0 Night Hag action) is ambiguous. On one hand, it says "The hag magically polymorphs into a Small or Medium female humanoid". On the other, it says "Her statistics are the same in each form." The stat block lists the hag as a Medium fiend, so the first sentence...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

I get what you're saying. If Durin's Bane takes on the form of an elf maiden, he's still a balrog, a demon, and a fiend on the inside. But there are no characteristics associated with type. AFAICT, there isn't any single quality all fiends have in common, so none of a creature's particular...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

Are we talking about the 9th level spell shapechange? If so, the only thing the 5.0/5.1 version of the spell says possibly touching on this is “Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the chosen creature,” so it depends on whether you classify creature type as a game statistic...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

Okay, well, as I said up-thread, I think that's a fine way to play. Nothing wrong with it. For me, though, it's enough to think up a "normal" consequence for failure, which I usually let the players know about before the die is rolled. Thinking up something particularly devious in the event of a...

    D&D General 1s and 20s: D&D's Narrative Mechanics

They can be. A failed ability checks in my games always comes with a consequence that follows from what's at stake in the situation, so if the PC(s) risk offending the baron to that extent, you betcha.
