Worlds of Design: The Revenge of the Kludge

Modos RPG kludge: your attribute bonus increases or decreases following a pair of formulae, based on attribute score. It's just clunky. The attribute score determines how much damage a character can sustain of that type, so the score can't equal the bonus or it would be too low. If the...

Free I just released my OSR style TTRPG Tellan! A free, simple, funky, and freeform RPG system :^)

Sweet! Everyone knows that free, simple games are the best 🤓 How about telling us how it works?

Suggestions for a "what are RPGs"/"how to play RPGs" resources

Maybe wikipedia? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game You also might try the early sessions of Titansgrave on Youtube.

    D&D General Ideas for a three-hour low-level Thanksgiving adventure?

This is a noble cause. Miracle Max is on the job! A rowdy session of "kill the invading orcs and sink their three ships" is always fun. Just remember to spare their horcses and loot the fire water.

Teaching the Matrix to Play Modos RPG

Soo... I wanted Adobe's AI to check my document, Modos 2 Free Edition, for personal metadata. The first step of that was to enable the AI Assistant, which promptly read the whole document up and down. Well, shoot. I wonder if it can play the game now? So, I asked. "Do you know how to play...

D&D 5E (2014) Have a new player that I will be DMing, got some questions.

No, since all of the classes and subclasses are pre-multiclassed fighters, thieves, clerics, and wizards. I wouldn't even introduce subclasses to a new player. One enemy is too much. You might try a little Boromir-versus-hobbits fight (friendly sparring) to explain the combat rules. (Which...

    Gun Fu, John Wick Style

I just dropped the rules prior to "end of combat" into OpenOffice text at 10 point font. It's about five pages, no tables, no illustrations. I suppose a nice flowchart might make this look more simple, but GunFu is supposed to be lightning-fast, right? My concern is that it won't feel...

That's unfortunate. Or: spoken like a true crossbow(wo)man!

Do you need Archetypes, Classes, and Villains?

A demo adventure should touch on all the essentials. But learning a new setting, lore, and game can't be done quickly if it's very original. I've had the Numenera book for years now, and I still don't know the setting, lore and game 🤓 1 being most important . . . Archetypes, 1 Metaplots, 4...

D&D General Crossbow and Bow House Rules

Digressing a bit, but 6e imposes disadvantage on all prone attacks. Which is dumb for crossbows. What's also dumb is that the goblin attacking you with a spear while you're prone gets Advantage, but the goblin attacking with a glaive does not. I'll do that one better: loading costs a reaction.

D&D 5E (2024) Ways to attack with advantage by level (with all the fine print)

What? Anyway, don't forget this one from the 2024 Free Rules: "The DM can also decide that circumstances grant Advantage or impose Disadvantage." Which implies that the entire Advantage list can be nullified by a DM-imposed Disadvantage.

D&D General Alternate Initiative Concept: "Y'all figure it out"

That's what it does in 5e. But since this thread is in D&D general, we should probably disregard feats. You're very generous with turn duration!

D&D General Crossbow and Bow House Rules

Unless there's one of those weird, mid-edition errors going on, it looks to me like bows get 50% more range than crossbows. At low level, being farther away from the enemy can be a HUGE advantage (for survivability). Also, bows are much lighter than crossbows. But yes, the x-bows deal a...

D&D General Alternate Initiative Concept: "Y'all figure it out"

Yeah, it sounds like way too much discussion. Unless your players are into that sort of thing. Just make everyone roll, and the highest roll goes first. Then you go around the table, in the direction chosen by the lowest roller.

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

That might have been a reference to the real world phenomenon of bars getting more interesting after each beer. Aw! You don't allow PCs that use magic, hoard gold, and kill on the daily? The OP observation on rule zero points to WotC suggesting there is one true way: the rule book's way. Can...

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

Discursive RPGs are inherently a conversation. Computer RPGs, not so much. But yeah, discourse is better in person. Don't fret. Some a lot of people form their opinions from what others post online.

D&D General Powering Up and Delayed Actions

It works great in Modos RPG. I suppose D&D could benefit from it, too . . . except that D&D is built on an assumption that everyone gets one or more attack actions per round. Your PCs might get bored. And what if the attack that PCs anxiously anticipated for a round misses? I think you'd be...
