Combating My Own Boredom as a Player

This. Just because you're not the GM anymore, it doesn't mean that you can't help the other players feel special (a GM job). Interact with other PCs in-character, cheer/jeer the acting character as necessary, pass notes/tokens/hand signals. Keep that immersion up. The mention for taking up...

    Worlds of Design: I, Spy

Two versions of "spy" shouldn't be misconstrued here: Spy 1: a person that hides its identity usually for intelligence gathering purposes. Spy 2: to view. So a crystal ball (spying device) can be used by a spy, but that's not required, and use of a crystal ball does not make someone a spy. It...

Final Fantasy XIV Getting an Official TTRPG

"Veiling the moon with the light of eternity, it brings another promise to mother earth with a bounty and mercy." A bounty of pages, will take an eternity to read while the moon is out (after work) . . . you might decode the prophecy!

Has Wizards of the Coast Given Up on Sigil?

Could it be that the team was forbidden to use the term "micro-transaction," like the rest of WotC was forbidden to say, "new edition?" Makes me think of the party games (TTPG if that helps) where you need to get your teammate to say the key word, but you're not allowed to say X, Y, or Z.

How Do You Keep Track of All Your RPG Books?

Try the Dewey Decimal System? +1 for the fretless, Danny.

Worlds of Design: Take a Bow

Not half bad! A longbow does d10 damage, which is enough to ruin someone's day, but not to disable a fresh opponent. It also does this damage from range (which close range weapons do not), which is a huge advantage. But, as said above, ammo is limited, and due to reloading needs, the longbow...

D&D General How would you make this ruling? Vortex Warp

No need for Rule of Cool: the spell has one target. The druid cannot be targeted by the spell, and therefore isn't going anywhere. If the druid ceases to be a "creature," then yeah, she/he would teleport with the fish as . . . dinner.

D&D General New Ravenloft Novel Heir of Strahd Coming Soon

I feel like Strahd's house guest standards have lowered.

how many of powerful beings and/or high-level characters do you think is appropriate in a typical fantasy world?

I'd look to supers to answer these questions, and I think their general response would be, "enough of one to counter the other." The number's going to go up and down, one side will hold sway while the other fluctuates, and the poor commoners will suffer in the meantime. It's complicated...

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Is Talking About AI in D&D Again

"Technology is not the same as tools" would seem to be my point. It's great to write something off as being a tool. That doesn't apply to AI though - that's a completely different problem.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Is Talking About AI in D&D Again

What about the fact that people use tools, but AI uses people? Or: a tool is supposed to make your job easier, not make you unnecessary?

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

You're right - no one wants to beg for an unfun result. But consider the Tie from a Powered by the Apocalypse perspective, if you will. Even when a contest comes up, something always happens in the fiction. There's no "you fail, next turn," or "you tied, roll again." A Con is like a Hard...

Friends, Gamers, Editors, Lend Me Your Ears! (New Rules)

Maybe it's not worth a thousand words, but does this make the contest look like an easy concept? I revised the Spoilers in the OP, and added Starting Your Character Sheet, which talks about the Character Concept, Goal, Flaw, and the Average Person rule.

The gap it causes in your wallet?

D&D 5E (2024) Okay MM 2024 is fully released, when is the 5.5e SRD going to be released?

They'll probably release it when they figure out what fraction of 5 to call it.

    D&D 5E (2024) Wights and Life Drain

So, life drain can be remedied in the same way as a night of heavy drinking? I'd hope wights were more dangerous than that.

D&D General What would your "fourth core rulebook" be?

Matt Mercer's Guide to Awesomeness? I've seen two Tomes of Magic that would make good "core" books. Heroes of Battle was a good book, and was in line with D&D's everything-must-die mantra.

Worlds of Design: What State is Your State?

It's probably helpful for the GM out there who's thinking, "yeah, my fiendish gnolls were probably tribesmen once. But I want them to be civilized, now. I wonder how they got from there to here?" Guns, Germs, and Steel seems like a great additional-reading book for this thread. Also, I think...
