D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

Flanking is not a thing in the base rules and assist is always the less optimal action.

    MichaelSomething's 4E Comeback special

I totally missed you mentioning you wanted to be a Paladin. Since you're covering the Defender I'll go for an Invoker instead of a Warden! It's not a role I ever tried so it'll be interesting.

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

And them make stuff up the moment a new situation crops since that seems to be the way Gygax and co did it :p Like your players come up to a locked door and one of them wants to break it down and you go "What's your Break Door score?" "My what now?" "Half your strength then add huuuh...

Also, we should start at level 1 or maybe 2.

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Like how 5e says "druids will not wear armor or use shields made of metal" utterly failing to fit into the establish rule verbiage of the rest of the edition and not providing any reason whatsoever for this, nor any consequence for going against it. Feels like the book taking away your free...

I'm not denying all these upside, I'm just bemoaning the implementation.

Not convoluted enough. There should be a long run-on Gygaxian sentence that concludes it's actually 7 years. But only in this specific combination, otherwise it works like you said.

And it was only the assassin with that sort of hidden feature?? I guess they didn't anticipate people being both DM and players?

    AD&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

So is the Assassin supposed to just... imagine this possibility and ask the DM about it?

    MichaelSomething's 4E Comeback special

To answer your questions, any adventure you feel comfortable with I'm fine, same with you coming up with stuff. For characters I'd rather make one from the book myself. If I end up playing an Invoker instead of a Warden I'd like to know what gods are available in advance.

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

It's always effectively just d20+d8 or d20-d8, but you get to have more granularity with your bonuses. Plus you get to roll a ton of dice if you go crazy :p But it makes it less effective as a crit fishing mechanic. Another idea would be a type of Advantage you can store when its given to...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

The way I would do it is split species traits in 'major' and 'minor' traits. To make a mixed race character you pick a base race and you get the major trait and then you can trade any of your minor traits for the ones from the other parents. Some major traits would be powerful and wouldn't leave...

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

What if extra Advantage/Disadvantage was just a bonus (or penalty) smaller dice (d6 or d8?) instead of another d20 and you just can keep piling them (or taking them away) but you still just apply one of them instead of all of them?

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

It is fairly straight forward so it has that going for it, but there's so many way to gain advantage that it kinda lose its magic. I think it would work better if the game was even more simplified.

Why did they invent that style when we already had Protection style?

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

Oh yeah the Protection Fighting style, you give disadvantage to an attack on an adjacent ally. I used it on a Fighter and it's nice but it scales very poorly with multple attacks and multiple enemies because you only get 1 reaction. And it does nothing for abilities with saving throws. I liked...

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

And that's why playing a Cleric is BOOOOORING in 5e. Advantage/Disadvantage seemed like a good idea but it really kneecapped any subtlety in terms of support moves. Also, Guiding Bolt can miss and be basically useless while Bless is much more reliable. And, of course, the return to the stupid...

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

I was going to mention flanking too! Just that feels like it would ad more importance to maneuvering, but because of the way OA works compared to 4e it'd be maybe too easy? Absolutely! Amazing class!
