D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

Yeah I played a Cleric, my first action was often to deploy Bless... but after that it was pretty much it until an emergency heal was necessary, and with low slots early on this wasn't something I did ever fight. There's Vicious Mockery that makes enemies less good at hitting but there's no...

    MichaelSomething's 4E Comeback special

Never used Discord or Roll20, but you know what: screw it I'll learn! Thinking I might want to play a Wilden Warden but I'm gonna take a look at the Invoker and see if I might not try a Controller for the first time.

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

We are all in agreement on that point, but it's really weird on 5e feels like a VERY selfish game. There's near zero occasion where spending your action improving an ally is more optimal than inflicting damage yourself. Adventurers work together but they very rarely feel like a team. It almost...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Controller. It moves you into a disadvantageous position. Depending on the rest of the powers it could also be a Soldier because it's sticky. I don't see it as a Lurker or Skirmisher since it doesn't want to get away from you, unless it's able to become intangible and power up its next move then...

Just because you can doesn't always mean it's a good idea :p

Having all that in the header makes it faster to read, you've already labeled the monsters for the appendix so why not?

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Oh yeah, Lair Actions! And Legendary Resistance. Maybe something to indicate which monsters already come with either of those? And the book could include additional lair actions you can slap onto monsters of your choice. Each lair action could add to the stats of the monster too, to make them...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Aah I see! Solo might not be a good term but I think we could still have a term to indicate an enemy is designed to be a dramatic centerpiece to a final fight.

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

You could limit the number of possible hybrids by doing like Pokémon and giving every species a egg group or two and only allow mixed ancestry that share a egg group.

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

    Let's just follow the liger nomenclature format: Human+Elf = Hulf (Or Elfan?) Dwarf+Orc = Dworc Orc+Human = Orman Orc+Elf = Orf Gnome+Halfling = Gnoling Tabaxi+Human = Catgirl

Curious what that looks like. A cursory look shows : Intimidate proficiency, 2 extra skill proficiency, and Savage Attacks. But somehow funnier.

If making things easier is classified as 'dumbing down'... How is it railroading? I want to know how you define monster combat roles, what you think they are and do.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Hmm ... I need to look at my 4e MM again but I could swear there was something like that? But if you already have the label you use for your appendix, might as well place it in the stat block too. If nothing else, it's useful when they get reprinted in adventures.

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

I think that's just a result of the revisions to Monster Math that occurred in 4e. the MM1 didn't have that many. some of these are probably adventure specific too, like Reavers of Harkenwold. What does that mean?

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Orcs are people, they can learn many skills and be any combat role. 4e didn't have a plain Orc, it had multiple Orcs that had function in an Orc tribe and different skills to deploy in battles and even religious figures and leaders and their entry mentionned other creatures they could ally with...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

Ahhh I see. That's a good point, it is flavorful that a giant and slow block would be easy to hit. Feels more like an issue of scale than of principles to me, though. Of course, in 4e we didn't have bound accuracy so I don't think you can compare numbers quite that easily, but the idea of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

That's just for equal level encounter. You can adjust difficulty by playing around with level. And different types of monster have different stats. So you just want monsters made randomly with no design principles whatsoever? Or painstakingly made with the exact same rule as PCs? shrug Just...

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

Yup, you pick which one goes. I could also see the DM being the one to choose which buff goes? I would probably do the 4e thing where you can only have certain types of bonus at once. Maybe limit it to 'Power' 'Item' and 'Special' bonuses. If you get a new bonus of that type it just overrides...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Explicit Monster Roles Return?

It wasn't a 'rule', it was a design principle, not the same thing. You can't really judge how hard something is to hit in 5e either? There's a Battlemaster ability to do that even! Know Your Enemy at level 7 says : And PCs like the Barbarian or Monk have bonus to AC and go around in cloth...
