At least it's not taller than he is :p

I guess that's a fair assessment. Honestly, I feel like a two handed weapon should inflict a penalty to Stealth the way heavy armour does due to how big they generally are. Rogues shouldn't be wielding weapons taller than they are if they want to be subtle.

D&D General The best representations of the power fantasies D&D has had

I thought the idea of a sneak attack was to do the same damage as a BIG weapon but with small weapons in exchange of specific condition. I think it’s because it would need putting SERIOUS thought into the wealth-per-level system of the game as well as properly developing the idea of harvesting...

I disagree it wouldn't change anything. I dunno but swinging a giant halberd is not what I would envision as a 'sneak attack'... Might have been an errata yeah. Maybe in Essentials.

And the Wizard fans never forgave us for it... The 4e restriction were for Hand Crossbow, Shortbow, or weapons of the Light Blade and Sling group. You could pick up mace and club with the Ruthless Ruffian Rogue Tactics.

    D&D General Gish Thoughts

Is it really a fighter though? It really is just a fighter in the sense of ‘one who fights with a martial weapon’. It’s not like an Eldritch Knight that can shoot a cantrip with one hand and on the next turn swing his sword (which is the WORST way to make a Gish, IMO), the Swordmage does both at...

    D&D General Gish Thoughts

I dunno if I would call the 4e Swordmage a 'fighter with spellcasting on top", it's more of a unique fusion of both sword and spell mastery.

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

I mean instead of in-battle abilities that key off CHA or WIS they would just have out of combat stuff that exploits those stats. Because Fighters could always use actual out of combat abilities. What’s the point of picking a stat over another if it doesn’t change anything? What’s the point of...

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

Well the Fighter could always use more out-of-combat abilities so why not give them actual abilities that depend on CHA or WIS?

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

There's like 1 ability the Fighter can get that mentions CHA and it's the Battlemaster's Rally maneuver. At best you could argue for a Samurai's skills? Is there any STR/WIS Fighter builds out there? Agreed on this point. Why should I sacrifice DEX and CON for something that doesn't impact my...

Strong point! We agree that it's possible for that gap to truly disappear, but you're right that you can reduce it and it all comes down to how much work you want to put into it and by how much you want to reduce it. There's good MAD (4e 'v' shaped Paladin) and bad MAD (Monk). The idea being...

D&D 5E (2014) What fighting styles would you add?

I would roll that up in the 'Reach' style personally. Oh yeah I forgot that one! Yeah, definately. Yeah something that doesn't involve 'fixing' the damage but rather makes them stand out from martial weapons.

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

You could always make everything a combination of two stats? Maybe even remove the progressive proficiency bonus entirely and just give out more stats buff with a handful of thematic level 1 buff from class and skills choice? You COULD put everything into STR every time to make sure your...

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

The stats were in pairs (STR/CON, DEX/INT or WIS/CHA) so in a way it rewarded you for having at least 3 different good stats. Maybe your Fighter DOESN'T need to go all in for STR and CON and could spare some point in WIS or CHA to have a good WILL. With INT being able to be used for AC you could...

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

I'm not a big fan of free for all muticlassing myself. But I don’t think we need to debate the entirety of 4e here so let’s just focus on the ‘Primary+Variable secondary’ aspect. The Rogue would pick a Rogue tactic, in this case the Artful Dodger or Brutal Scoundrel Option. An Artful Dodger...

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

Well alright then. In 4e you had a primary stat for your class but each build had a different secondary stat. Like the Artful Dodger Rogue gained benefits from CHA while the Brutal Scoundrel gained benefits from STR while they both attacked with DEX. That sort of things? Just saying you have...

D&D 5E (2014) What fighting styles would you add?

The way I see it, there should be a Fighting style for every type of loadout you can get: Sword and Board Big two hander Two weapon fighting Ranged weapon Thrown weapon One versatile weapon Bare handed Then you need a fighting style that’s even more generic, which the one that gives +1 AC does...

That's already how point buy works. Again, I don’t think this would stop optimizers. You’re not going to design SAD out unless you design your game so wide range of skills are optimal. Problem with that approach, of course, is that the characters might end up being too similar.

    D&D 5E (2014) I’d be glad for MAD

Personally, I think it’s a fool’s errand to try and ‘design out’ optimization. No matter how much you take out of the game, people will hate being mediocre at stuff and find ways to optimize for what they want to do. You make everything MAD then the optimizers will find the best combination of...
