Did it though? Like... if they were bad spells, why not just remove them and use the spaces to diversify some other caster? Are you afraid of hurting the Smite Spells' feeling or something? Even in Universe it's not alive! Why the insistence that Paladins should use those other, inferior...

So Polearm Mastery is pretty much a trap for Paladins at this point. Same for TWF. You want to keep your bonus action for your smite so you can't take options that give you more of those because you won't be using them as often as someone who doesn't have smite so it's pretty much a subpar...

Yeah and I bet people would have complained that every class was the same or something...

See, I think having to pick between using your slots on Smite or on Utility was already a tactical enough decision point and you didn’t need to be needled every turn about it. And I agree about Slots. Again: Paladins shouldn’t even get slots; just Smites they can trade for utility magic. Turn...

It's not the same because it hinges on an unknown. You don't know the roll you're going to get later in the turn. You don't have all the information you would need, unlike choosing between two different bonus actions NOW.

All the Aura on the 5E Paladins were just passive, always on, effects... why would the new guy have auras you need to turn on?!

As long as it has the same 1 minute duration as the other Smites.

I like that philosophy! Only DMs complained about GWM/SS. I never saw issue with it. Did they also nerf spellcasters or just the Martial? Smite just needed a once per turn clause, needing a bonus action just makes for really flat turns for the Paladin.

Why not? Martial Prowess is almost never given any sort fo focus in the books. Add a few more Fighting styles, place them in a chapter, then showcase a few synergetic combination, give them a 'Martial School' name and throw in some lore to get people thinking on the kind of people who use those...
