    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

All the systems I've seen (snd there are a lot now) do mixed species really well, without unbalancing choices. The heritage/culture system in LU is fun. (I just recently made a wood elf raised by fire elementals. His forest was destroyed and he's now a champion dedicated to retribution.) And...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D species article

It's not that the concept of half elves and half orcs are disappearing from the other games, it's the other games are opening things up to any kind of mixed species. Level Up, Pathfinder, Tales of the Valiant, DC20 all have ways to mix and match species traits. Ghostfire Gaming is updating Grim...

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

In my game a missed arrow could absolutely hit a different target that's not a buddy, or just not hit anything.

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

I allow missile fire into melee. I make sure players are aware they risk hitting an ally if they miss their target. If they miss, there's a chance a friend is hit instead but it's not automatic The likelihood of friendly fire depends on the chaos of the scene. I like how really skilled archers...

D&D General Grateful for Old-School Essentials

I was sold on the little hardcover books in boxes. It was a very silly reason to buy a game, but am loving it! So easy to tinker with and add bits and pieces to. Dolmenwood has me excited but waiting on the physical fulfillment.

D&D General A Gnome and a Halfling have a Baby. What is it?

I made a gnome/halfling in Level Up and called her a gnobbit. 😁

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

It feels like WotC doesn't like the whole idea of a very small chance of "something big" happening. . That's fine. The old ability is wonky. Why keep the name then? Explain your positioning and rename the 2024 version. Maybe my complaint seems trivial but I've always had a pet peeve about game...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

It works once per long rest. The juicy narrative bits will start feeling mundane. Powerful, yes, but not miraculous. As @Aldarc says, "glorified spell slot." And since it's 100% reliable now, maybe too potent? Do we want a back up Raise Dead ready to go?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

I agree. Calling on Divine Intervention means the character is calling for help and cannot control the outcome. Choosing a spell is not this. Now the old DI wasn't the best and could have used tweaking but I don't like the new one. JC says ability is no longer "Mother May I?" And I am left...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

It's important to speak out against harmful attitudes. Yes, Gygax is dead, but unfortunately, those that refuse to acknowledge his sexism, or even defend it it as harmless, should be challenged. Hatred is again becoming more vocal. It's loud, but I believe a minority. We can counter it.

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

We really didn't! All those TV shows with women constantly needing help or just being an ornament. I loved the old Magnum tv show, but did men ever hire him? I remember nervously walking into this dingy old comic shop to get latest issue of X-men. But the guy at counter was chill and just...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

I grew up in the 70s. And yes, definitely more awful attitudes. But it wasn't everyone. My grandparents, for example, who were born in the early 1900s, genuinely treated everyone with respect. My parents also raised me with attitudes only slightly different from today. I did have to learn how to...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

And the PF1 archetypes didn't just add a few features at set levels. Some archetypes just tweaked the class while others were almost complete rewrites. I really like PF1 archetypes system. The spell-less guide is a good one to look at.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

It's not that the individual changes over the years, on their own, are bad. It's the accumulation of them. The changes we are getting for 2024 combined with the decisions made back in 2014 tipped it too far for me. Of course, everyone will have their own preferences.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I'm not looking for a game with more dead characters. GMs can easily make more dead characters. My point was that all these little changes have been eroding away the hard or dramatic choices that I enjoy in a rpg. I call it "consequence free D&D" because the game cushions players from bad...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Shadowdark is so easy to tinker with. I'm playing in a Shadowdark game and my husband, who is running it, loves creating things for it. He says it really gets his creative juices going. I'm running a Shadowdark game in pulp mode, using Theros. It is easy to blend in the extra goodies Theros...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

Of course we can, but I am looking at the game as written. As written, these changes, happening bit by bit, are taking away those hard choices that can make the game exciting. And I'm pretty easy going.

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

I don't need my 5e games to be more deadly or darker themed, but I'm finding the game to become more and more "consequence free" for the players. Some examples off the top of my head: 1. Animal buddies/familiars are all spiritual. If they die, can be resummoned. Can also be dismissed if having...

D&D General Professor DM from Dungeon Craft has a special message…

He often jokes that he can do what he wants on his channel because he doesn't depend on it for his sole income. YT channel pays for fun stuff and unexpected expenses. Looks like treatment went well and very high chance cancer is gone. Wishing Professor DM good health!

Professor DM is American. He teaches high school English. Maybe teaches theatre too?
