Dead Man's Chest -- Spooky Pirate Fun -- COMPLETE! Nov 3/06

Gross is indeed one of our secondary design considerations for this campaign. Exactly.

The Return of Sword & Sorcery Cinema?

Christian Bale -- there's a reasonable suggestion. And he can act. And yeah, he was hella thin in that picture.

Sell me on creating new d20 fantasy PDFs . . .

Phil, I won't try to sell you on it because I don't believe you're wrong. I have given up trying to even make a profit on my products, and I am only going to work on products I'm willing to lose money on, and I will consider any and all money I spend on them as money lost, plain and simple. If I...

Seven Samurai - brand new 3 disc DVD set

Depends on how much improved the new transfer is over the previous Criterion release, which I have. But most of that stuff has already been released, and I'm not paying another $50 for a couple of documentaries. Rather spend that getting a Kurosawa film I DON'T already have.

The Return of Sword & Sorcery Cinema?

Okay, we disagree. Making somebody look three feet tall seems less of a challenge to me than making Vin Diesel a pretty, slanted-eyed, 96-pound weakling.

The Return of Sword & Sorcery Cinema?

Rhys-Meyer is a pretty good suggestion, even though he's filled out a lot since his Gormenghast days. Thirty years ago David Bowie was a shoo-in for the part, but we seem to have gone away from the Thin White Duke's aesthetic of male beauty. There certainly don't seem to be any A-List stars who...

    DINO-PIRATES: True20 In Action

The dice rolling was definitely a big part of the fun. Toughness Saves are guaranteed dice drama, every time folks are crowding around in order to see what the results are, as well as the Fatigue saves for spellcasting. The Damage Track makes for a very different combat experience. I noticed...

Dead Man's Chest -- Spooky Pirate Fun -- COMPLETE! Nov 3/06

Creepy is one of the primary design goals for this campaign, so that's encouraging.

    Recommend a Romantic Movie

Those are some strange recommendations for "romantic" movies, folks. Except for Casablanca. Casablanca is awesomely romantic. The most romantic movie ever made is In The Mood For Love, by Wong Kar-Wai. DRIPPING with romantic longing, unspoken need, achingly beautiful from start to finish.

    DINO-PIRATES: True20 In Action

It was so much fun, I'm doing it again. July 8th, a game store here in Vancouver called Drexoll Games is holding an RPG day (they do this once a month) and I'll be running SLAVE QUEEN OF THE RUINED CITY once again. Updates to the rules, new PCs, improved all around. More updates to come!

    OK, Conan pretty much ROCKS

People who don't love Conan The Barbarian are just weird, that's all there is to it. It's a great film. The music, the dialogue, the effects, the fight scenes, the melodrama, the hot chicks, the hair, Thulsa Doom -- it's all good. It IS kind of unfortunate that they called the main character...

Dead Man's Chest -- Spooky Pirate Fun -- COMPLETE! Nov 3/06

"I swear, if one more person asks me if I've seen the Yellow Bloody Sign, there will be murders." Black growled his frustration as the little group made their way towards the governor's mansion, where warm light and activity promised a party. He stomped up between the waving palms that lined...

    Wasted movie weekend.

And on the other hand, it IS true that delivery of massive content has gotten orders of magnitude easier in the past twenty years. And so maybe's it's true that entertainment IS lengthening in some measures.

    Wasted movie weekend.

On the other hand, short-form animation is flourishing, music videos continue to thrive and Charles Dickens wrote really really really really really long stories a hundred and fifty years ago. To say nothing of Henry VI, parts 1, 2 and 3.

    Wasted movie weekend.

As you point out, event pictures have always been long, starting right with Griffith's The Birth of a Nation (187 min). And event pictures have steadily become more and more significant in terms of revenue over the history of cinema. And of course we no longer have serials in the theatres --...

    OK, Conan pretty much ROCKS

Great effort, Jes, but for me, I think you keep that movie (which shares a main character name with a set of stories by REH and nothing else), and then film "Red Nails" or "Queen of the Black Coast" or something. Cause I LOVE that movie for what it is: goofy swords and sorcery fun. It ain't...

Yer darn tooting. But all my love right now is for those wacky DINO-PIRATES and their beloved NINJA ISLAND.
