D&D General Favorite villains from your games

@RangerWickett you'll probably appreciate that I think the villain from the Zeitgeist campaign was really well done (kept vague for spoiler reasons). I think a big reason was the combination of 2 main factors. First that the first few times encountering him the party didn't quite know the...

INTO THE MOTHERLANDS Publisher Cancels Plans

Yes. They announced they were developing they own system in December of 2021. They've been releasing playtest previews to backers starting almost a year ago for a limited group and to backers as a whole last August. The streamed show has been using the new system since the latest system...

    D&D 5E (2024) Pulse check on 1D&D excitement level

Basically I'm not seeing enough major changes that I like to think it's worth the cognitive load of making a complete change or the financial cost of a new set of books. I'll probably end up going through the SRD when it's updated and might mine for some houserules, but overall will probably...

    Andrews McMeel Universal Exits RPGs

It's locked to backers only, but one of the kickstarter updates stated they believe the contract was violated, but didn't have the financial resources to take legal action without jeopardizing being able to still put out the book. My understanding is it's a bit unusual compared to other...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Wild Shape

I think mechanically that's correct, but flavorwise there's a big difference from a character shapeshifting to scout themselves vs sending a familiar to do the scouting for me

    D&D 5E (2024) New Wild Shape

I can understand the design goal to simplify things and not require druid players to dig through the monster manual and pick out options for individual animal. But this seems an overcorrection and loses most of the interesting abilities that would be the reason for shapeshifting in the first place.

Academic Survey about TTRPG actual play viewing/creation

Dr. Emily Friedman at Auburn University has been doing research on various actual play shows. She just posted a survey for creators and viewers about their motivation and interests, and some questions about why people don't view shows if that applies to you. It's a pretty quick survey to complete.

A "Why Oh Why" RPG Thread [+]

I feel like it started off as orientalism - treating the monk as the weird foreign class because it was cool, but now is kind associated with D&D-type monks as well. Daniel Kwan in his Candlekeep Mysteries adventure "Book of Inner Alchemy" has a bit that explains ki as something that applies to...

3PP Release (3rd Party Book Release) Paranormal Power: A Psionics Option for 5e and A5e, written by Steampunkette!

Book came out just in time for my campaign. I had a few threads relating that I was wanting to figure out how to tie together (during world building players came up with an idea of a new deity appearing that is associated with more advanced tech that I've been wanting to do something to make it...

Ginny Di interviews WotC's Kyle Brink

That’s all fine and all, but you’re responding to a statement I didn’t make You said you found the two statements incongruent and the obvious approach is was too comment immediately. My explanation was why I think they are compatible and reasonable that they thought at the time the obvious...

Ginny Di interviews WotC's Kyle Brink

I actually think this is probably one of the comments that is more honest and less in need of spin if true. If they really were already revising things and thinking a new version was almost ready to release I can totally understand thinking it better to wait a bit and release it along with an...

ToV Kobold Press Project Black Flag Friday: Publishing Partners

From Nord Games - Spectacular Settlements and Dangerous Destinations have been good sources to randomly generate locations and are basically system neutral. I've used their Revenge of the Horde bestiary book a bit to make some nice variants of the standard enemy creatures. I have their other...

Kyle Brink Interviewed by Teos Abadia (Alphastream) on OGL, WotC, & D&D

Since the original interview that caused the controversy you're referring to was talking about how it would be a good thing if the management of WOTC wasn't just white men, thinking it had anything to do with "is it ok for white guys to play D&D again" means you were wrong. And yes this second...

Kyle Brink (D&D Exec Producer) On OGL Controversy & One D&D (Summary)

this is important context. He was specifically asked if there were non-white Non-males in leadership positions and the answer was that the diversity among the design team had expanded and people were beginning to take on design leadership which he expected to lead to more opportunity higher up too.

Tell Me About Your Favorite Mechanics

Already been mentioned 13th age escalation die and Alien stress The third edition of unknown armies does stats in an interesting way, with each stat part of a balanced scale. So being good at one makes you worse at another. For example the stat used for fighting was balanced by the one for...

3PP Release (3rd Party Book Release) Paranormal Power: A Psionics Option for 5e and A5e, written by Steampunkette!

The last two lines are missing from my copy too (after "Otherwise") Also the Ballistic Mindstrike reads as if damage is automatic while other types require saving throw. Based on context of Fling Foe referring to an attack, I'm guessing attack for the basic version should be an attack? Really...

D&D General [CC SRD and OGL] Good OGL Product Full of 5e Spells?

Kobold press vault of magic is just magic items not spells. There spells in their heroes handbook. Also some spells in their setting books but nothing too shadow themed i think. Depending on your timeline you might look at the current deep magic 2 kickstarter. The original deep magic is getting...

    Crow Eating thread

I really thought Hasbro/WOTC would have a hard line of a new license that they could have more control, so backing down on OGL 1.0a and releasing more under CC was a big surprise. I still think once One D&D comes out we'll see something like the d20 Trademark License, but with the survey being...

D&D 5E (2014) Any good source books for an elven kingdom that I can drop into a homebrew 5e game?
