    D&D 5E (2014) Toward a new D&D aesthetics

Very well summed up. The problem—for me—is that most of the current digital fantasy art is in a sort of bland style that looks like all the artists have learned from the same old "digital painting" tutorials on DeviantArt and YouTube. And it's NOT just D&D, it's a pretty widespread occurence...

A lot of those garbs were derived from military uniforms. Everything is connected.

    D&D 5E (2014) Toward a new D&D aesthetics

Well, D&D mostly doesn't have firearms. When I see "modern" D&D art where everything (especially the clothing) looks vaguely Victorian, I can't help but wonder: "Why do these people bother with chain/plate, and with outdated weapons? Where's the muskets, the mortars, the cannons? Where are the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Toward a new D&D aesthetics

How about this angle: D&D (or at least Basic D&D) has always been for children/pre-teens, but what society deems suitable for kids of that age has changed. Old "for kids" was more mature than today's "for kids".

OSR Old School Essentials Box Sets Kickstarter

If you're perfectly happy with the RC, you probably don't need this. The RC is based on Mentzer's BECM (without the I for Immortals) OSE is a faithful recreation of Moldvay/Cook/Marsh BX, so not the same as BECMI/RC. Both are, of course, very similar, with the Thief skills being a big...

OSR Old School Essentials Box Sets Kickstarter

Don't forget thatthe XP progression for the Paladin is different: for the Fighter, lvl2 is at 2k XP (and then 4k, 8k etc) and for the Paladin it's 2750XP for lvl2 (and then 5500, 12k, etc) Different XP progressions are a big part of BX's internal balance!

Would you play in a campaign with racial/class limits of it fits the story?

Yes, that is my take on it as well, pretty much. If I were to run, for example, Mythras in such a setting, I would allow women to be Völva (weaving magic through incantations), and men to become runecasters (imbuing items with magic). Same spells, more or less, but different ways of working...

Would you play in a campaign with racial/class limits of it fits the story?

What would you make of a historical game set in the Viking age, where men would be barred from, or at least heavily ostracized for becoming a magic-user?

D&D General worst (real) advice for DMs

Players should absolutely lose half of the fights, POTENTIALLY. As the saying goes, in the OSR: "If the PCs find themselves in a "fair fight", it means their planning sucked." Combat should ALWAYS be a last resort. Building the setting around the PCs!?! That's putting the cart before the...

Would you play in a campaign with racial/class limits of it fits the story?

I'm perfectly fine with that. I much prefer the DM having a strong thematic vision and enforcing some restrictions, than serving a bland mishmash of everything.

[+] The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - SPOILERS ALLOWED

It is mine as well. I would absolutely love to see the "Narn i Hîn Húrin" on screen (as a big-budget series) done in a tragic, epic way, totally earnest and sober. Granted, it's depressing stuff, but it's spun from the same cloth as the ancient Greek tragedies. Also, concerning the dwarf...

    The Rings of Power

So, we're slowly getting pictures from Amazon's upcoming Middle-Earth series, and I must say I'm absolutely appalled,—but also not the least bit surprised—by all the flak some of the creative choices are getting from subtle and not-so-subtle racists. [emoji37] A non-white dwarven queen! The...

The Book of Boba Fett (spoilers)

It's funny how some people (not here) remarked that since Boba is "middle aged", and Cad Bane is a generation older than him, he should be very old. But we don't know the life expectancy of Duros. They could well live to be 120 or 200. Just like Ahsoka, a Togruta. She's at least 15 years older...

    Asking clarification regarding moderation

As far as I'm concerned, the solution would have been very simple: the thread about the biblical setting (explicitly biblical, too!) should not have been created in the first place, or should have been locked immediately, because it falls under the above-mentioned ban. Problem solved. Would a...

    Asking clarification regarding moderation

I don't see anybody actively offending any members of the board. In civil discourse, there is a clear difference between attacking/insulting a person (an action which should rightly bear consequences), and criticizing/dismissing, or even just trivializing, an idea or a concept. Ideas, concepts...

    Asking clarification regarding moderation

But that's an "argumentum ad populum", an argument from popularity, which is a logical fallacy. Something isn't inherently more true, or valid, or valuable, just because it is popular.
