What tropes do you want to see more of in fantasy RPGs?

Yeah. I really really REALLY hope the setting will not be porter to 5E. It's too charming (quirky, weird, whimsical) to be ruined by stampeding superheros. Besides, the setting doesn't lend itself to most modern class-concepts. Knights, Friars, Minstrels, Hunters, Fighters.... That's where it's...

What tropes do you want to see more of in fantasy RPGs?

The "Friar" from Necrotic Gnome's "Dolmenwood" setting is just that: A sort of unarmored Cleric (with AC bonus), gets Simple and Improvised Weapons (pans, shanks, cured sausages), Spellcasting/Turning, Foraging, and Herbalism. Very flavourful, decidedly old-school. Which is to be expected, as...

D&D 5E (2014) Respect Mah Authoritah: Thoughts on DM and Player Authority in 5e

Sure. But once you brace the randomness, it can make the best stories. [emoji4]

D&D 5E (2014) Respect Mah Authoritah: Thoughts on DM and Player Authority in 5e

That's why I very much prefer it when characters are "blank pages" , either with unspectacular, mundane backgrounds, or "strangers in a strange land" with no strings attached. The only thing that should dictate the story are the dice themselves.

D&D 5E (2014) Respect Mah Authoritah: Thoughts on DM and Player Authority in 5e

Ideally, I prefer the following: The DM presents a "situation" (sandbox). The players decide how they engage with the situation. The dice decide the outcome of their actions. The DM alone has authority over the setting. The players alone have authority over the PCs' actions. The dice alone...

So what are you reading this year 2021?

I just recieved "The Illuminated Edda" by Andrew Valkauskas, author the RPG "Fate of the Norns" I've just skimmed over it so far, but it looks delightful (and got much praise from Ed Greenwood)

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

The "adventurelessness" and dullness of real-life can be attributed to us trying to minimize chances of a premature death. Increase excitement, adventure, danger, and you also increase chance of dying a violent, premature death. Remove death from adventure and adventure becomes dull too.

D&D General Songs that would make good adventures

I feel like the (sadly now defunct) band BAL-SAGOTH definetly belongs in this thread. Their singer/writer Byron Roberts wrote entire stories into which the lyrics of their songs were embedded. Here's the lyrics to the title-track from their 2nd album, which is my favourite. Bear in mind that not...

What of it? Random death is realistic. Combat is inherently dangerous.

D&D 5E (2014) The Philosophy Behind Randomized and Standardized Ability Scores

In "TBH" at character creation, you roll 3d6 in order. If you roll 14+ for one stat, the next stat will automatically be a 7. Once you have 6 stats, you can swap 2 stats to your liking. First time you roll for ASI is when you reach lvl 2.

D&D 5E (2014) The Philosophy Behind Randomized and Standardized Ability Scores

You get ONE try for each stat at each levelup (which I personally find excessive) If it's your class' main stat, you can try twice.

D&D 5E (2014) The Philosophy Behind Randomized and Standardized Ability Scores

I like how The Black Hack does it: you roll 1d20 and if the result is ABOVE your current stat, it goes up by 1 point. That way it gets harder the higher your stat already is.

    D&D 5E (2024) "The Future of D&D" (New Core Books in 2024!)

I don't. But then again, I prefer fantasy to be a little more grounded in reality. And if there is (fantasy) racism and segregation, then it is precisely in order to explore difficult subject matters in a not-real environment. Gonzo can be fun. As can be historical fantasy. It's all a matter of...

D&D 5E (2014) The Philosophy Behind Randomized and Standardized Ability Scores

How would you rate this method of assigning stats that I totally just came up with (but which might already exist in one form or the other?) All stats start out at 10 You can distribute a total of 10 points. If you lower a stat below 10, you recover points on a 1-1 basis. No stat can be raised...

D&D 5E (2014) The Philosophy Behind Randomized and Standardized Ability Scores

What I can't wrap my head around is automatic ASI ever so often in 5E, as well as the expectation that by level X, you are "supposed" to have 20 in your main stat. I much prefer the way games like Mythras handle stats, where your starting stats are your body's absolute achievable prime. If I...
