Discussing Sword & Sorcery and RPGs

Offense is taken, not given! Death Metal music isn't "for everyone" either, but the people from that scene are some of the most fun, caring, and loving people I've met in my life.

D&D 5E (2014) PC races that a DM has specifically excluded from their campaign and why

This. I usually have humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves available to players, them being the dominant populations of plains, mountains, hills, and forests, respectively. I really don't like sertings with dozens of sentient, culture-bearing races, be they furry or monstrous.

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

Greg Gillespie's "Barrowmaze" has a bunch of illustrations on full page at the back of the book, and in certain places in the text it says "show the players the illustration on page X.

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

Yeah, that's a good question. I wouldn't say there's actual pressure but I guess it's just artists "going with the flow" and being —consciously or unconsciously— influenced by what they see others do. By the way, the character art (monsters, PC races) for the Dolmenwood books is noticeably...

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

The current fantasy art I like the most is specifically done by pauhami and ullathynell (both on Instagram) for Necrotic Gnome's upcoming "Dolmenwood" campaign setting (for Old School Essentials and other BX-derived OSR games). It's a stark contrast to the prevalent modern manga-style and/or...

TSR Ernie Gygax on New TSR, WotC Beefs, Trademarks, Licensees, 5E, & More

"Medieval" Europe spans about a millennium: from the 5th to the 15th century. "Vikings" as they are known as such these days, were a thing from the late 8th to the middle 11th century. As such they are neither representative for all of the Middle Ages, nor all of Europe. Just to be precise...

D&D Movie/TV New batch of Set Photos

The "plate" armour and maille look dirt cheap and fake, though. No, they look way too modern for late Middle Ages. More like mid-to-late Renaissance.

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

As a Patreon subscriber privy to upcoming Dolmenwood content, I can show you what a typical Dolmenwood hex writeup lools like. (I hope I'm not getting in trouble for posting this.) The "Tangled Forest" part below the title refers to one of several encounter tables for different forest...

D&D 5E (2014) Check Out Wild Beyond the Witchlight's Back Cover & Text

D&D General Discuss: Combat as War in D&D

I actually say the DM doesn't need to do that. The PLAYERS need to find out (scout, scry, bribe) what they're up against, and come up with a plan. They have to figure out if they possibly bite off more than they can chew. If they find themselves in a fair, or even difficult fight, it means their...
