That is one of the things i tend to kind of handweave, as it is not the absolute number of magic items per char, but what they are and how they improve a char. Also it depends if i want to dm a campaign with loads of magic items or little to none. I will balance it out with other factors, like...

Bob the fighter is a cliche out of some webcomic, i just cannot remember from which. It basically Bob the fighter gets killed, and his Replacement character shows up looking alike also named Bob. And he gets killed so often, that the rest of the party looses count.

I probably misspoke : Put silver in place of gold for every price given in the PHB for a first approach to be more realistic. 20 gp today is worth about your 30k $ if you asume 1 gp is something like a kruegerand (which i do) so your modern times comparison is not quite correct. Translated...

Why does some basic weapon cost several gold? Or in other words why is gold so cheap in D&D? The prices in the PHB are the most unrealistic thing of the whole game. First fix: Alter all prices in the PHB to silver. Potions of healing prices in relation to other goods thogh is totally ok...

Might be that many rules cover combat but still, I would disagree based on that D&D is a RPG, a Role Playing Game, not a CSG a Combat Simulation Game. I do agree, that the mechanical aids for role playing situations are less than in other RPGs, but ideally you would not have to use these much...

The thing is, the games i have played or mastered which caused most frightening or paranoid situations at the table often were with very little or no combat at all. Often maybe because fighting would have been certain dead and the players knew it (or very strongly - but wrongfully - guessed it...
