What are you reading in 2025?

My wife read this one recently. Alas, I think it had to go back to the library, but I can always find it and check it out myself.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

My experience is that the trick is to stop arguing without saying you're stopping arguing. Stop responding.

What are you reading in 2025?

At this point, my preferred approaches to series of novels are A) read a shortish series once it's all published and B) read a longish series in whatever order I find the books, because the novels stand alone just fine. (Longer series that don't stand alone, I don't read. And 'Salem's Lot is a...

What are you reading in 2025?

As I said, I don't have any strong delusions about my writing, but I think the time I spent recording audiobooks--listening to other people's writing, in still other people's literal voices--shaped my writing, and at least improved my ear for dialogue. (He's right about dialogue tags, or...

What are you reading in 2025?

Scalzi might--or might not--hear his prose in his head as he composes it. Some writers do, some don't--I mostly do, but I don't claim it means my prose is anything special. It's plausible that I hear my prose in my head because I spent so much time listening to people read other writers' prose...

What are you reading in 2025?

We recorded several of the earlier novels in that series at the audiobook studio I worked at. Uh ... There were some verbal tics in the novels that practically leapt off the pages when narrated. I know what he was trying to do but I can't help laughing. I have a sneaking suspicion audiobooks...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Not even this site: The obvious response is more insulting than I care to be, so I'll just let what you said like there like a turn on the sidewalk.

Apparently there were enough people finding alternative lubricants that the rules now specify that graphite is the only permissible one.

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

Yeah, I'm happy the players are playing well--I actually plan and run in the expectation they will--but it's always a little bummer when something has the excitement and tension pulled out of it prematurely.

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

And because things are asymmetrical, it's much less of a "fun in play" problem if a monster loses a turn or three--the GM will still have things to do, and will still be playing. This isn't an argument so much as an expansion on your point/s. (Yes, some GMs sometimes get frustrated when their...

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

I think the context will matter for both losing a turn and losing a character, as far as whether it's interesting or suck.

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

I don't disagree that the badness of turn loss is being overemphasized, but as you seem to recognize it does suck--especially if it's recurring or extended, and (practically) unavoidable.

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

It's not as bad as dying, but getting shut down with a save you literally can't make does suck. The idea of the save/s getting easier isn't bad, but if there's an expectation of symmetry at the table then that's going to nerf some things the PCs will (or at least might) want to do, as well...

    How Do You Learn Boardgames?

We own, but haven't gotten around to playing, Jaws of the Lion. When I looked through it, it seemed as though it would be a superb introduction to what Gloomhaven and Frosthaven are doing.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It's a stout--usually an imperial stout--brewed with adjuncts intended to evoke the taste of pastry. Chocolate cake (Mexican cake was a thing for a while) is common, I've seen gingerbread and carrot cake and cookies. I dunno if pastry stout's the trend it was a couple-few years ago, but I see it...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The most-local to me brewery (that I know of) at least has a variety, things like a hefeweizen and some non-imperial, non-pastry darker beers, in addition to a (I'm serious, here) variety of IPAs and other hops-focused beers. Any brewery that makes a beer called "Barleywine Is Beer" is one I'm...
