    D&D 5E (2024) 75 Feats -- not nearly enough

Never understood why it had to be a choice and not just let people have both. It was one of my first changes because it was always a bad choice to have to make.

    D&D 5E (2024) 75 Feats -- not nearly enough

Given that they are sectioned off by level and usage, it's actually a lot less. Definitely not more "Session 0 slog", certainly, and for those who don't want to use them they won't. You talk about decision points, but sometimes a lack of options can slow things down because nothing quite fits...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

That's only if you don't take any Feats, or you managed to convince your DM to roll-up stats and got good rolls. Their AC can be better than most, but that isn't really as true in practice because of the nature of the game. The Monk has to spend valuable ASIs, while others can simply put on...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I think multiclassing feats works when you have enough feats to do it, and allows you to curate which features can be combined with what. But I'd agree that making more classes that fill more niches might be a better solution than what D&D currently has.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Honestly one of the biggest things that allowed PF2 to find its footing that it took from 4E was its "You multiclass by taking feats", which ended up allowing the early levels of a class to be distinct and interesting because you couldn't just dip in for the good stuff. The problems with...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I mean, being fast is part of the Monk's thing, though. It is a small augment to the ability to cruise up vertical surfaces/running across liquids, but largely by saving a single ki point. I don't really see it, tbh. You can tank a bit, but you don't have the hit points to take a huge hit...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

But again: why not just give it for free? It already incurs cost by taking your bonus action in a class relying on them, so what's the point in also making it take up all your "Cool Thing" points? When it's something so situational, double-paying makes it even less desirable. This is a big...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

And it's not like it wouldn't already have cost: most of the big class stuff (like Stunning Strike) are tied to Flurry of Blows and such, which also cost a Bonus Action. There are really two costs rather than one, because there's the opportunity cost of using your Bonus Action for something...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Sure, but these are all specifics mechanics, not generalized mechanics. Yes, Healing Word doesn't work like it did in 4E, but that's my point! It was ported over in a way to 5E that feels appropriate for it, using its mechanics. The generalized mechanical version of Healing Word is "Ranged...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I mean, I think we are mistaking specific mechanics for general function. The ability to heal in different ways could be represented through temp hitpoints, allowing people to use Hit Dice to heal, or a bunch of other things. I mean, we don't think clerics couldn't work because they used...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

In my experience, people grasp tactical combat fairly quickly and naturally. Like, "teamwork" is something people get and while it can take a little while to understand if there is some weird meta going on, people are fairly quick to get how they can help other people. What I find is way more...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

I would disagree, generally speaking, and I think part of the reason is because by making these things pay-fors, you generally see them not get used compared to something like Flurry of Blows. I find a lot of that missing what I'm arguing about. Rogues aren't about multiple attacks, they are...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

The Monk should just get its own version of Cunning Action, tbh. Make Step of the Wind into a free combination Move/Disengage, which might actually be worth a proper Ki point. Turn Patient Defense into something interesting, like maybe a reaction attack against a miss while Dodging for a ki...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Variance matters, but I don't see it mattering as much with my version as it does with the incredibly limited version given through Commander's Strike. The point is not to create complete equity in experience for a power, but to at least have some solid baseline, and the most basic of attacks...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

It doesn't have to be exactly balanced to everyone; variations are fine as long as there are other powers which might benefit them more (perhaps some movement tactics or a single strike and fade tactic). That just means you have to make decisions on what to use to maximize your impact. But the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Yes! All the fun stuff you normally want to do with a Monk is all tied to the same damn ki pool, and for some stuff that other classes can simply do ("Hey, you can do the stuff the Rogue does at the cost of the resource that fuels all your cool abilities!"). I got it into my head that every Monk...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

What you need is a fighter with recharging/regenerating resources. I have said many times that the way to do resources for martials is to steal the Grit mechanic that Matt Mercer stole from PF1 for his port of the Gunslinger: it's simple, the basic idea of regenerating on a kill/crit is solid...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Sure, but I see that as basic combat stuff. I never really saw wasted rages, even with new players, tbh. Their resistance pales to the Bear and to use their power they basically have to hamstring themselves a fairly substantial amount of time. I get the idea of exhaustion for attacks, but it's...
