I'm certain that he has at least 30-40 "friends" who want to play D&D with him for face-time and brown nosing. This isn't usual. When you have money power and influence, there is usually an ample supply of people willing to do whatever it takes to win your favor.

Clearly the sentiment has shifted from 1E where death of a PC was common to 5E where people seem highly invested in their PC's story, and would be quite upset at a character death. So, that being said, it depends on the players, and is one of the topics that should be covered during session 0.

If this is an intro adventure, the characters will mean nothing to the typical new player in their teens and twenties. It should have been directed at grognard nostalgia.

I liked the Illusionist in 1E when it was a separate and distinct class with many of it's own spells, rather than as a subclass of wizard.

One thing about having things in writing is that it's inflexible and essentially pigeonholes you in the mind of the GM. Despite a persons game play preferences, I believe that most adults can be flexible, and be patient and/or tolerant of other play styles. For example, I'm not a big RPer, but...

I don't need extensive detail. However, the GM should have all of the relevant mechanics available if they intend for the PCs to go in a certain direction. For example, two sessions ago, our GM said he expected us to travel by land to get to our next destination, but he didn't have any ideas...

Half elves and orcs should remain in the game as an option. If you're offended by them, simply don't include the optional species in your campaign.

This is no surprise. There are more players now than in 2014, and as someone said earlier, they have reached critical mass.

All this talk about heros... I posit that D&D has become a superhero game. I mean the effective "healing factor" of D&D PC's would put Wolverine and Deadpool to shame. :)

What if your current group isn't interested in a new game? What if you don't have a group at all? Under those circumstances, getting a group together to play a "Not D&D rpg" is a challenge.

And that in my experience is typically the biggest hurtle with most other TTRPGs.

I didn't say any would fail, but gaining an audience anywhere near that of D&D is likely to be a challenge.
