Our online games which we hold on Fridays typically last 4 to 5 hours. If it were held on any other day of the work week, it probably wouldn't go for more than 3 hours. But of course, the available time is dependent on everyone's work schedule.

I didn't say you can't do both. It's a matter of priorities, and making time for all things in your life. But ultimately, IMO, family and job are more important than games.

Spouses, children and job come first. TTRPG's comes second.

The underlying problem with this question is that high level characters in 5E typically have so much gold that costs are irrelevant.

It seems like the OP covered all of them.

For that reason above, WoTC and D&D have nothing to worry about. Folks here are the exception. 98% of D&D players don't care about all of the various WoTC controversies, and will continue playing D&D no matter what. WoTC doesn't really even need to create a walled garden to maintain its market...
