I watched a YouTuber read a few of comments that claimed their DM was not DMing correctly because they didn't run the game like Mercer. It implies that these people were essentially "advising" their DM to play like him.

Yea, but no one is ever required to follow the rules. Even back then, DM's adjusted or ignored the rules that didn't fit their play style.

That's not a 1E issue. That's a jerk DM issue.

I think it would help if half orcs and elves were viewed as their own separate species rather than a sub species or a hybrid. None of the playable characters in D&D were ever really races. Just like dogs and cats, they are separate species.

It depends on the players and the level of control. I know a few people who would take that opportunity to turn their character into a Mary Sue of sorts, and have the plot revolve around them at the expense of the other players.

The average isn't necessarily the majority. Young children are largely an untapped market. Why wouldn't WoTC want to market to them? There are more effective ways to attract the interest of 24 year old.

Obviously, people of all ages play MC. The majority however are children.
