    NPC Deception/Persuasion and player agency

I'm building an NPC adversary for a campaign (a cleric of Asmodeus), and their key Deity skill is deception. But then it occurred to me that rolling to see if the NPC successfully deceived the PC's takes away player agency. That is, the player should be able to decide whether their PC believes...

Pace of Play, Engagement and "Excitement"

It depends a lot on what players want and their expectations. For example, if someone came to D&D from Critical Roll, they will likely get bored easily with long combat turns. But, a big part of the problem IMO with speed is not always with the mechanics themselves, but with players who are...

    Bad Faith and Sealioning

This isn't a political or science forum where facts are facts, and if the person denies the evidence provided, there isn't much point in continuing the conversation. Best just to ignore. Just about everything in TTRPGs is opinion unless you are discussing RAW, and that information is usually...

    D&D General Entrance Themes!

I've used "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gee's to introduce a high charisma/suave NPC, as well as "I'm too sexy" from Right Said Fred. I've played "Joy to the World" (Jerimiah was a bullfrog) from Three Dog Night for a Grippli (Frogfolk) And finally "Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas...

    Spoilers Wicked Thoughts and Reviews

I heard that it was decent, and I'd be willing to go see it. You know, the funny thing is that it's a prequel, yet based on the original story, there can't be a prequel, because it was all in Dorothy's imagination after getting bumped in the head. :)

    Aging and Gaming

I find that I don't have the time or patience to lean new rules anymore. The one recent exception is Pathfinder where I engaged in a several day cram session. But I still find it necessary to look up rules - so the internet and VTT's are immensely helpful to my old brain. With a VTT, I can watch...

    D&D General Let's list/complain about things we don't like

My list. The official elimination of the half-elf and half-orc as separate and distinct species. Magic-like abilities have mostly replaced magic items. Mechanics/abilities heavily weighed in favor of the PCs BBEG's need minions, lair actions and legendary resistance in order to provide a...

I don't like that WoTC only hires former Disney illustrators.

Musk says he'll create an AI Game Studio

At best, he'll throw some money at it, make a big show of it, hire people more interested in making money or advancing in politics, and it will fail miserably.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

Would anyone be against sexy centerfolds if there were both male and female models? After all, women can be horny teenagers too. I think I remember seeing a "recent" drawing of a female orc in an apron holding a rolling pin. For me, that's not D&D. And doesn't such a picture reinforce gender...

What Genre Do You Wish Inaugurated TTRPGs?

Pure sci-fi. (e.g. Star Frontiers) I'm not a fan of mixing sci-fi and fantasy like Star Wars or Starfinder.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I had a group who was TPKed. The players rolled up new characters (for the same adventure), and eventually came across the bodies of their former PC's

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I disagree. As long as the party has the ability/option to retreat, it's not the GM's fault.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I don't go out of my way to kill PC's or cause TPKs, but full player agency means that sometimes people make bad decision, and intelligent monsters would take full advantage of those bad decisions. I mean, if you're 2nd level, come across a dragon and decide to draw your sword, well.....
