Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

I'd rather have them all totally wasted than have one bit of cigarette smoke in the room. I have pretty sensitive allergies. We do have a smoker in my game, and he's the only smoker I've known who wasn't a litterbug (he goes out for a smoke an hour, and he carries a container to take his butts...

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

*shrugs* I'm uncomfortable around people who are drinking, in general. Even moreso when I'm at a game and wanting to play with sober people. Now, if someone's just having a beer and stretching it out over a few hours I would not see that as a big deal, I guess.

July 2009 - What are you reading?

I got a book called The House of Cthulhu from the public library. It appears to be a fantasy novel in the Conan tradition blended with Cthulhu mythos stuff. I don't yet have a good sense of whether I will enjoy it - I'm about half a chapter in and it hasn't gripped me yet. I set aside...

Players: What Do You Bring With You to a Game?

During two campaigns (now over) I brought a laptop and dice and did everything from the computer. The most recent campaign I was in, I opted for a simpler character and so only brought a PHB, character sheet, and dice. (I usually have a pencil and a pad of post-it notes in my dice bag, as...

    ENWorld Spamletter

It's real, I chatted with Russ about it on Facebook. One thing I did learn is that the "no newsletter" setting deep in the Options in your user account is referring to an older attempt at a newsletter and doesn't affect whether you get this one or not; so you should use the unsubscribe link on...

    Two ettiquete questions

No question these are rude behaviors. My guess is that, rather than establish a "rule" on these two specific behaviors, the moderators would like you to click the "report this post" button on the post in question. That way a mod can take action (either address it in the thread, or privately...

This Weekend @ the Boxoffice: 2009.06.29

As there was a lot of fliming in Wisconsin (and in Madison) I think Public Enemies will get some support here as well. We went with a group of Kara's friends, one of whom was an extra (she got to see herself for a split second in a scene filmed outside the state capitol building; apparently in...

    [3.x] 3rd Party Hidden gems?

These gems aren't really hidden, but dollar for dollar I have gotten extremely good value out of Tome of Horrors revised, and Green Ronin's Advanced Bestiary (probably the only monster template book I will ever need).

Returning to my Roots: Me and Basic Fantasy

When I get that itch - and it is an almost physical sensation - nothing satisfies it better for me than reading the 1E AD&D DMG, Player's Handbook, or old modules like Secret of Bone Hill or In Search of the Unknown. That stuff can take me to a very different place and time in my life in a...

This Weekend @ the Boxoffice: 2009.06.29

I saw a Harry Potter trailer in front of a screening of Public Enemies tonight - I am not a fan, but I thought it looked pretty cool and scary.

Returning to my Roots: Me and Basic Fantasy

I see the appeal but have not yet found a retroclone that fits my exact taste. I'll probably have to cobble together one myself at some point. I like the direction this Basic Fantasy goes but I would have taken a couple more 3E-isms with me (along with 3E's AC progression I would have liked 3E...

July 2009 - What are you reading?

Oh man, I bought those two volumes in college and wore them out. This was before we had (and I could afford) quick/easy access to video - it was the next best thing to actually watching the Flying Circus... As for me, I am re-reading the short story collection Cthulhu 2000. I'm scouring my...

Playable Expert (and general NPC class rant)

I'm personally a fan of NPC classes - I find them a useful part of my DM's toolkit. I actually have developed brute (barbarian lite), bandit (rogue-lite), and cultist (sorcerer-lite) NPC classes that are flexible and easy to apply. But on to your class... When I imagine an Expert of this...

June 2009 - What are you reading?

I have set aside Swords Against Death and instead am re-reading the short story collection Cthulhu 2000. I'm scouring my local public library system for some other collections of Cthulhu-esque stories. I finished listening to The Mauritius Command and have moved on to Beggars in Spain.

Forked Thread: PDF or Dead tree?

I'm having trouble formulating an answer, partially because I'm not entirely sure why I want some things in electronic form and some in paper form. I guess my ultimate answer is "I like it in both". I'm running a Paizo module right now - for purposes of really studying it, scrutinizing it...

Revised grapple rules, with Hackable Limbs

That's +8 to their grapple score as presented in the MM (so for example a creature with a MM Grapple of -20 would instead have a -12). It's just my note about how to adjust the MM value. Pathfinder essentially does the same thing with its size modifier (the size isn't such a big factor).

Revised grapple rules, with Hackable Limbs

Wrote this up for my game group, thought I would share. Hope the formatting works ok... ---------- Grapple: Many D&D monsters have an Improved Grab ability that allows them to start a grapple after hitting with a melee attack and suffering no attack of opportunity. Larger monsters have a...

Loot as you go, or no?

Related question for DMs: do you allow groups to have a "group list" of what was found and permit divvying up later, or do you force dividing loot as it is found?

How long do you spend preparing a game?

See, I do count that as actual prep as this is the part that gives me the biggest headache. :) I can crank out stat blocks like nobody's business (and I find that part fun and enjoyable, particularly tweaking monsters and adding spells and feats from non-core sources), and if that's all it were...
