Defeated by puzzle - campaign over: Here is the offending puzzle!

Hm, what about this: Each symbol represents a number that is linked to another number (with a different symbol of course), something like Phytagoras' formula: a^2 = b^2 + c^2. I'm not really good at maths, but that just idea came to my mind (because I remember that dice puzzle Petals around the...

    D&D 3.x Magic of Faerun in 3.5?

Some MoF spells also reappear in Complete Divine, Complete Arcane and Complete Adventurer (mostly with only minor changes).

    Protecting against Blasphemy

Yep, I meant half-fiend red dragon. As CL equals a creature's HD, a CR 23 half-fiend old red dragon (28 HD) would kill an ECL 18 party in an instant and an ECL 23 party would be in serious trouble unless every PC has Freedom of Movement online (that does not protect against the weakening and...

    Protecting against Blasphemy

Use Shapechange to take construct form (hm, helps as usual only wizards)... Counterspelling is always a good choice. Increase SR (AFAIK, there is cleric spell that gives SR). House rule Blasphemy: Use deafened instead of dazed (as does Holy Word, IIRC). As a side question: What is the CL of a...

    Wild Shape and Equipment

Well, as long as the druid is NOT targeted by Disintegrate or a Sphere of Ultimate Destruction and fails the save... Ioun stones, animated shields, wildshape armor and dancing weapons should be usable in any form, even if the druid or master of many forms wildshapes into something ...strange.

    .... at will

Normally, it is a standard action to use a "at will" ability.

    You last "Kill"

Hmm, let me see... as a player: my shifter (polymorphed as a temporal dragon) annihilated a nyth with a confirmed 20...meanwhile, the two deepwood snipers killed six nyths with their railguns (its a D&D/d20 future setting)... as a DM: same setting as above, a few sessions before the nyth fight...

How to challenge a high powered group?

Oh yeah, yesterday's session went exactly that way. Ever watched Army of Darkness...(or Dawn of Dead, if you want)? Exchange the castle by the small city of Shevel in Rashemen and replace Ash by a group of level 9 characters and there you are... Hordes of intelligent skeletons attacked the city...

How to challenge a high powered group?

If you just want a tough fight, try to advance monsters. But be careful about the new CR, it might be too low. I did that several times and it turned out that the CR easily could be up to 5 higher. A fully advanced legendary tiger with maxed out hide skills and a surprise round killed two level...

Rules for volcanos, earthquakes, natural disasters

That covers it pretty well. If you want to use spells to simulate natural effects, have a look at Earthquake, Transmute Rock to Mud, Transmute Rock to Lava, Obedient Avalanche, Incendiary Cloud....

    Improved Toughness

Don't see why. If a character spends his feats to get tons of hp...so be it. He wouldn't be that good in combat and/or casting metamagiced spells.

[April] What's up in your campaign?

Two epic campaigns I'm DMing, and one of those will continue this evening... Campaign #1: The plot is taken from the AD&D adventure For Duty and Deity (some spoilers below!). The party was banished into the realm of the demon lord Grazz't after disturbing the plans of the Twisted Rune (a group...

    Shifters and wild shape

I'm currently playing a shifter in an epic campaign. But the class was revised IMC. The "old" shifter PrC from Masters of the Wild was on the edge to be overpowered if the DM does not care about the creatures the shifter encounters. On a certain level, the shifter was invulnerable to magic if he...
  14. Dark Dragon

    Don't fall!

Yep, that's why it was house-ruled IMC (see initial post). If a spell was dispelled, it is GONE! And no stupid exception for Fly and the few other spells that have a save fade-out option (that can't be dispelled, BTW!).
  15. Dark Dragon

    Don't fall!

Wow, lots of ideas to rule a fall. :) Hmm, time to pick the best...or time to mix? Oh well... Patryn's rulings look very nice and I tend to agree with most of the arguments. Especially that aerial combat is not reduced to either stay on the mount (or protect a Fly spell) or fall off and down...
  16. Dark Dragon

    Don't fall!

Granted. But there are some ways to bend the rules to a character's most profit. Take the wizard from my example. He starts his turn knowing that the Fly spell is gone. He may simply cast a second one without any problems since he is actually not falling. If he would try to cast a spell DURING a...

    Don't fall!

After endless discussions with some players (and no result): Who can clarify the rules of falling creatures to me? Most important point: When starts a creature to fall? (And cover the rules this situation?) Example: A flying wizard is targeted by a Dispel Magic and his Fly spell is dispelled...

    Stacking DR?

Hm, well, this makes some encounters (especially epic ones) somewhat harder. So be it. IIRC, some epic monsters had (before they were errated) two types of DR, e.g. 30/+7 and if that fails (because someone attacks with a +7 weapon) something like DR 9/- kicks in. The ruling that a barbarian's...
  19. Dark Dragon

    Stacking DR?

Simple question: do different DRs stack? E.g., a paladin casts Blessing of Bahamut (gives DR 10/magic) and receives a Stoneskin (gives DR 10/adamantine) from his wizard buddy before fighting a Tyrannosaurus. Is his effective DR now DR 20/magic and adamantine?

Who is from or based in Continental Europe?

Another German here, born and still living in Westfalia...Münster, to be exact. Today, it's rainy (as it is for most time of the year), but we had some days with snowfall this winter, which is a rarity here. The nice side of Münster: lots of cozy pubs, old (sometimes medevial) buildings and you...
