How often are you reading their posts and it isn't in a thread that is focused on a conflict between playstyles?

So, with respect, the condescension here is really annoying. Speed-of-lookup alone is not the relevant metric, which Is why I spoke in terms of engagement with players, which is the real job of the GM. My most recent campaign was D&D 5e - The Wild beyond the Witchlight. I had the Beadle and...

Ah, sorry, I didn't use the word "meaningless". With all due respect, no. I was noting that the statement we were given only held in once specific condition. That should NOT be taken as my holding the exact opposite position, and it should NOT be taken as negative judgement on anyone...

Whether giving those unused elements standing in the fiction is valid or not depends on the playstyle agreed upon before play began. Then, I wonder at calling this a "concern", insofar as games that intend to preserve player agency in that particular form already have that preservation baked...

I personally still find looking things up in a physical book less disruptive to my engagement with players than turning to a computer to do the same thing.

It has, but even since 3, an entire town would likely contain several (at least possible) encounters. It'd need to be a pretty sleepy town, with not a whole lot going on, to be only one encounter in game terms.

Incentives are subjective. If you enter into a game with the notion that the only incentive is individual power achievement, then yeah, I guess what you say follows*. That notion would not apply to most of the groups I have run games for or played with recently. Most of them have been...

Games you need to go outside your normal group to play

For my main group, the restriction isn't on genre or playstyle of game. The restriction is that they prefer long-running campaigns. When they want a campaign that's three to five years long, I'm only going to try two or three rulesets with them per decade.

I am an ebook person for fiction. I interact with game books differently than novels, though. While doing session prep, having an electronic copy of a game book is terribly useful - copy-paste into notes is a great tool in prep. But for several reasons I prefer to use physical copies for...

My cynical side says, "Yes, but only if our rhetorical goals match. If my rhetorical goal does not align, I have little need to accept the meaning as clear."

The phrase has several clear meanings. The central issue of contention is over which is the "correct" meaning.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Mod Note: Hey there. Claiming that folks who are mad at you are wrong is not specifically an alt-right tactic. It is a very basic rhetorical defensive position. The guy finds himself set upon, then yes, he's going to say, "No, wait, folks, you've got it all wrong!" Defending yourself from an...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Mod Note: Hey, folks? This thread is nominally about a role playing game - Daggerheart - and what people are going to do with it. This thread is NOT supposed to be about neurodiversity. This site is not where one should be turning to find authoritative information about neurodiversity, nor...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about change shape and Paladin Divine Sense

Well if Type means anything, changing Type should then remove any and all characteristics associated with Type. If you are no longer a Fiend, you should lose all powers associated with being a fiend. The rules specifically say there are no rules associated with Type, but there's a certain...

No, I think you miss the basic point: Properly priming the players, so that they have enough information, but not too much, and retain the idea that the information you've primed with are suggestions, but not the totality of what they can choose to do, is NOT EASY, and one can slip into one of...

And, in my reading, that line I bolded is not an accurate representation. Since the person who said it originally reacted positively to my post, I think I got pretty near the mark. So, EzekielRaiden was specifically and explicitly expressing frustration at how their actual inquiries weren't...

Yep. The original question was framed a bit in terms of the processes and procedures used to avoid some things that would be considered failures in the context of a sandbox. 1) When I got to framing the answer in terms of Skilled Play, I believe I took it off that particular line of thinking...

So, I think I see part of the issue: The players don't know what they don't know. There is typically some minimum of information a player needs to have in order to make informed decisions and have wants and desires. Before they have that minimum information, they cannot generally be expected...
