D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical: WotC goes under and Hasbro vaults D&D. Now What?

D&D, in this scenario, probably looks like the rest of the RPG market. Various publishers each try to snag their own chunk of the now-unsupported player base, resulting in a balkanized collection of vaguely similar games with smallish followings, as well as some scattered folks continuing to...

RPG Archive: Star*Drive for D&D and Traveller

It looks like you folks don't actually want to discuss Star*Drive. Thread closed.

Words mean things. He didn't say that the GM can cause "borkforble", because "borkforble" is not a word anyone knows, and means nothing to anyone here. Ergo, the word "harm" was chosen for its meaning. And if you are using the same word for two different things, that is implicitly saying those...

Greater Than Games Shutters Due to Tariffs

If there's one solid criticism to be made of GTG, it is that they could not manage a timely crowdfunding delivery if their lives depended on it. The Sentinels Comics RPG was... a year late? The board game was... three years late? Something like that?

As opposed to, "I admit it isn't okay, but I'll do it anyway! Ha!"? Like, of course you feel it is legitimate, or you wouldn't have said it. What you seem to miss is that, in communicating with others, your own feelings of legitimate use are typically less important than those of your...

RPG Archive: Star*Drive for D&D and Traveller

Mod Note: Yes, rather. This thread is supposed to be about Star*Drive. Not about White Wolf, vampires, or what constitutes a good or bad metaphor in whose mind. Please keep it on topic, folks. Thanks much.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

No, you put a stake in it's heart, fill the mouth with holy wafers, and then decapitate. It's the only way to be sure.

And Starter Sets, which have had pretty good adventures.

Well, they needed a better sounding business-use term than "influencer".

RPG Archive: Star*Drive for D&D and Traveller

Alternity was published in 1997, the same year WotC bought TSR. I will check my copy when I get home, but I believe it bears the TSR mark. As in the thing was already printed when the purchase happened.

As I said, think there are some alternate definitions of "harm" that I'm not on board with. I find what you give there to be overstepping, and much like abuse of the concept of "triggers", that definition of "harm" actually makes people less safe at the table.

I don't think the power has much to do with it. I deny that rules-based process-of-play constraints on who has authorial control over what will do anything to reduce what I consider the potential harm. The harm I think likely is just about as easily inflicted by the player next to me as by...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

With a great deal of respect, games have evolved. What you forget is that evolution doesn't have a preferred direction, or a plan. It just blunders around, and some stuff survives. That it didn't end up exactly with the thing you are imagining at the moment doesn't mean they haven't evolved...

Well, such products exist. One of my players is running one to give me a break while I am setting up a new long-term campaign. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/114457/always-never-now The issue you probably hit first is that having all the rules for everything the players might...

Harm? I think you and I may have different ideas of what qualifies as harm that might call for care to be taken - and what comes to my mind would not be covered by rules-algorithms that don't have empathy.

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

It generalizes, actually. People who are really good at most professional-level skills are not necessarily good at the business end of things. Like, being a great woodcarver doesn't mean you can profitably run a furniture company, being a good doctor doesn't necessarily make you a good...

What Does the RPG Hobby Need Now?

Yes, but admittedly a high-risk one (most games, even with support, don't go too far), and thus hard to make profitable. It would be terribly useful, but hard to make actually work.

Mod Note: And in my experience, ascribing motives to folks to suggest their stated intent as... counterfactual, shall we say... 1) suggests the discussion is likely beyond a useful point. 2) ends a poorly. You don't want to be at that poor end, I expect, so please, respect, or take a break.
