D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

In standard 5e rules it only takes a month or 6 to get to level 20. But I'm like you and slow it down.

D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

I thought of it both ways and I think 4 cantrips at level 1 is the way to go.

    D&D 5E (2014) ludonarrative dissonance of hitpoints in D&D

I want damage reduction because I'm tired of getting burned when I take a tray of cookies out of the oven. Any system which can't model a decent potholder is no good IMO.

D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Fighter: The Zouave

Unless he multiclasses into wizard at second level, then he can just go to the weekend seminar.

D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

New House Rule for my game: Wizards have to start with at least one cantrip that uses a spell attack, one that uses a saving throw, one that uses concentration, and one that will be in their chosen school. How else they gonna learn these skills?

D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

If only there were simple, easy to cast magics that were designed to help wizards learn spells. Oh wait they had those (called cantrips in earlier editions), but they got buffed to simple, easy to cast magics that do lethal damage and eventually scale to be more powerful than many 2nd level...

D&D 5E (2014) Cost of Attending Wizard School

"OK class, I know none of you have ever cast a reaction spell before, but its time to practice your reactions with the shield spell. Half of you ready your magic missiles" "Wow, you all did great, now side A practice absorb elements. Side B get ready with your firebolts, this is going to...

6 years to level 1, and then level 20 after a month of adventuring... :) ...should've multiclassed and done the weekend seminar.

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant 5e?

Want a different feel for magic? Go with prepared slots for wizards. Hear me out... Not the old memorize/forget style, but rather all wizards can prepare spells by spending 10 minutes/spell to create a scroll by writing the spell into their spell book. When they read the scroll/page in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant 5e?

varies alot I would say 1-8. Hit points don't tend to be the encounter limiting factor. Its usually caster spell slots, but not generally the healer that's the limiting factor.

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant 5e?

In my version (20 is still possible), but 19 is the common max. The purpose is have some variety in primary stats. Now instead of everyone needing a 20 and anything less is sub-optimal, a few who commit to a specialized race or take a feat may reach 20, most will be at 18/19, and 16/17 is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant 5e?

My experience playing with reduced HD healing doesn't support your concern. What it does support are role playing opportunities to develop relationships with NPCs in local healing temples and convalescing in hospitals. From a world-building perspective this is pure gold. Not only does it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Variant 5e?

Here are some changes I use: 1) 3 HD at level 1. I use either E5 or E9, proficiency bonus starts at +2 and goes up by +1 every level in E5 or +1 every other level in E9. 2) Max ability score 19 (same as gauntlets of ogre power and other stat increasing items), except for a stat with a racial...

D&D 5E (2014) Difficulty Settings for Advanced Players

Make Monsters Tougher: Use HD instead of CR to determine proficiency bonus. Let monsters be proficient in all saves. (that way you don't have too look them up and wonder why isn't this monster proficient in ____ save???)

D&D 5E (2024) What Improvements Would You Want with 6E?

I want: 1) Mechanics that allow for some BBEGs to be viable solitary opponents. 2) Easy variant options for low-magic world building. 3) Easy variant options for hard mode. 4) A consistency editing pass so that when I read the fluff and compare the mechanics I'm not scratching my head and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighter Non-Combat Ability Brainstorm

I like this idea. The out of combat skill that I associate with real-life fighting is recognizing and being physically dominate. The fighter's social dominance reflects that mind set. It isn't the witty persuasion of a bard, or the cunning deception of a rogue or the social haggle of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fighter Non-Combat Ability Brainstorm

I've come late to this thread, but I see enhancing abilities that the fighter already has as a great place to start. Many of the fighter abilities seem like they are unnecessarily weak already and enhancing them doesn't infringe on anyone else's role. "...as fighters, they all share an...

    D&D 5E (2014) How to De-Magic 5e

Another approach to this problem that I've started doing is "picking the low hanging fruit" Which spell-like abilities seem most out of alignment with a low magic world? After Sorcerer and Warlock which I touched on in previous posts in this thread. I'd pick Wild Shape and Weapon Bond. I...
