Different philosophies concerning Rules Heavy and Rule Light RPGs.

Never heard of it? It dates back to the early 80s. ;) A good system, skill-based. I've only used 4e, because its a bit math-heavy, but the Roll20 support makes it a breeze to run. Excellent damage system, decent skill system. I've never used the setting itself (but I've used the concept...

Worlds Largest Dungeon Holds 'Secret Doors' Contest

I felt the Dungeon of the Mad Mage was the improved successor. But WLD was OK if the GM broke with the 'dungeon' mentality and treated it like it was a country or region; If the group chose sides in the various (lightly covered) conflicts, they could have a large and varied experience with...

My go-to modern is Morrow Project 4e.

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

I expect they would be operating on numerous worlds in the course of the campaign; I usually run campaigns of 40-50 sessions. What they would need? Ammunition, food, medical gear, batteries, munitions, special equipment, better equipment, replacement equipment, clothing for the climate...

I guess it depends on your players. I've always GM'd for adults, who don't need simple things explained to them.

Role Playing in Westeros (Game of Thrones/HotD)

You need to decide if you are basing it on the books or the HBO series. If the latter, choose a system with detailed rules for nudity and sex.

Its the mindset. My sentence conveyed the details required by the injury. Yours took two words and dragged it out into verbiage that added nothing but delay. One of the great issues GMs need to avoid, is falling in love with the sound of their own voice. Keep things moving. The players write...

How to Delay or Avoid GM Burnout

Pick the right system. The last time I had GM burnout was 1981. The reason I was burning out was the tedium of AD&D (You know it as 1e) combat. The endless 'roll to hit, roll for damage' to attrit PCs down to zero hit points wiped out the love of the game. I switched to systems where damage was...

It slows down the game, and is unnecessary. I haven't played D&D since 1981, but as I recall, three hit points on a troll doesn't need extra verbiage to make a player realize they did nothing. Slowing down a game adds nothing. There's other players waiting to act, so keep it moving.

I've been GM'ing since 1979, and I have never bothered to describe a wound; the system does that for me. "You're hit in the left upper bicep; 8 points structure damage, 8 points normal bleeding, adjust for armor, roll for shock." What's not to understand?

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

That's not for me. As I've mentioned, I am not interested in abstract systems.

I can't imagine having to describe what a wound looks like. If your system doesn't convey that via the results, its not for me.

I like crunch, because crunch = options, and options are the fun of the enterprise. Low-rule systems means the GM has to ad-lib stuff, and that means inconsistency, and more work for me. The rules ensure fairness; if PCs and NPCs die the same way (method), then survival is up to the player(s)...

Mongoose Publishing Acquires Dark Conspiracy RPG

I always wanted to run a campaign in DC, but I never had the chance. Unlike most 'we battle evil' settings, the main evil in DC isn't subtle; they're punching into reality.

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

Sounds like a good campaign. (y) I plan on the PCs being agents, and low-ranking ones at that. I expect that they will pose as Administarium auditors a great deal, which would give them the authority and rationale to poke around without exciting nearly as much interest as the Inquisition...

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

True, but the power to obliterate entire planets requires a vastly higher rank than the PCs will start out with. An as every veteran knows, it doesn't matter what the regs say, if supply won't cough it up, scrounging is the only way. Also, not all Inquisitor operations are done openly. In...

Dark Heresy: running a campaign without money

That is now Plan B. (y) Given the 40k ship lore, ours will be a largely planet-bound campaign, with the occasional and obligatory space hulk thrown in. They'll hitch rides between planets, for the most part.

    ALIEN RPG Launches New Kickstarter

Curious here: how are the xenos, who are limited to melee attacks, intimidating with the PCs having access to long-range fire (both direct and indirect), liberal use of explosives, high-tech recon devices, and all the other basic gear? I know the system is pretty minimal, but it is hard to...
