D&D 5E (2014) Can your Druids wear metal armor?

Was this the first Sage Advice you've ever read? Because "simple" is rarely how I'd ever describe Crawford's Sage Advice either on the WOTC website or Twitter.

    D&D 5E (2014) Masters of the Universe

Yup. And it wasn't alone in the early '80s. I just picked up the blu-ray of the cartoon Thundarr, the Barbarian. That cartoon initially ran in 1980 and '81 and rerun in 1983. He-Man debuted in 1982 and the cartoon in 1983. I don't think it's a coincidence. And every episode of Thundarr reads...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Spell Selection: Does the PC or the *player* choose their spells?

I think it would come down entirely to how the PC roleplayed it. Personally, I'd get a kick out of a player of a warlock describing how all his spells are involuntary for the PC, even if the player actually picked them all. I'll never play a warlock so I'd absolutely want to be a player in such...

D&D 5E (2014) Can your Druids wear metal armor?

Oh, yeah. 5e rules look like they are written largely for an audience that's played D&D before. That was probably fine in 2014 but now the rules really need to be cleaned up.

D&D 5E (2014) Can your Druids wear metal armor?

It's not in the spirit with the bulk of the rules in how it's written. But it is in the spirit of 5e as a whole - an edition intended to reflect, honor, and echo earlier editions of D&D. That overarching feel is largely why I started playing D&D again in 2014 after skipping 3e and 4e.

D&D 5E (2014) Can your Druids wear metal armor?

As a DM in 5e, I've only had one player choose druid. She played a Dwarven Druid and really leaned into the druid tropes while also trying to lean into being a Dwarf. The limitation on armor, rather than being constricting, was embraced and explored. What life experiences and choices led her...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Beyond Cancels Competition

The rights to almost all the music in WKRP was tracked down (all but six songs or so) and now you can get it on DVD, if you're interested. But your point stands. Took a long time for the music rights for China Beach and Wonder Years, as well. Stuff that will probably never happen will be shows...

D&D 5E (2014) The 6-battle adventuring day, does it even exist?

I've had anywhere from 1 to 12 encounters in an adventuring day. Getting there meant making a long rest one week (modified) and getting rid of short rests entirely. Time everything off of long rest. 3x short rests = long rest. I've found the game is so much more fun to run as a DM. Set...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is canon about older-edition settings in 5E?

Mystara is the only D&D setting I really know well and these examples are all spot on. I've run the original Sinister Secrets in 5e several years ago and I placed it SW of the capital in Sulescu village because I had no plans to run the other modules but Blight Marsh on the Karameikos-Five...

D&D General Do You Run NPC vs NPC Battles? Why?

I've never done this kind of thing for D&D specifically but it's exactly the kind of thing I'd enjoy doing. I'd play board games by myself and play both sides. But if I did I'd never do it during a session. I mean, I enjoy reading Enworld but I'd never do that during a session, either. If I...

D&D General WotC: Novels & Non-5E Lore Are Officially Not Canon

I'm only on page 22, so forgive me if I'm not up to speed on the other 28 pages. But all the hullabaloo makes me glad my favorite setting is Mystara because at least that setting isn't drowning in material. It had a few forgettable novels and a metaplot that's easy to skip. Plus, it has lots of...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the best class for a single class only campaign?

I go with Rogue. I like the class. Everyone can have Expertise in sneaking so that Assassin gets to use his 3rd level ability. The subclasses are fun and I think I'd enjoy taking a lesser-used one. Effective at range and in melee. Plus, and this is most important, it'd be really easy as a...

D&D General RA Salvatore Wants To Correct Drizzt’s Racist Tropes

I find it telling that the bigger hang up about Drow is that it's supposedly racist against African people and not the obvious sexist portrayal towards women. When I look at a typical picture of a Drow I don't think "African". Drow look like, well, Elves. But I DO see evil women in charge...

D&D 5E (2014) What level did your MOST RECENT campaign get to?

Level 7. But it had slow advancement and retread some ground when the PCs hit level 5, three quit in a short period (two moved and one got a job that prevented her from continuing) and three new players were added at level 3 for their PCs. The entire campaign lasted 18 months and was incredibly fun.

D&D General Eliminating the whiff factor

The last thing I want is for 5e turns to take even longer. Fast turns means faster, more exciting combat. It keeps players engaged instead of zoning out.

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule Idea: Characters Gain New Backgrounds at Levels 5, 11, and 17

I like this a lot. In the few 5e games I've DMed to higher levels it takes about six months or more of game time to advance each tier. I've struggled with how to allow characters to grow (mechanically) outside of their class. I will add this to my next campaign, which I hope to start shortly. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Race/Class combinations that were cool but you avoided due to mechanics?

I made this change myself about five years ago. Never regretted it. I also added the reverse for basic humans. Instead of 6 +1 scores you decrease one score by 1 and increase another by 1 for 1 +2, 4 +1, and 1 score at 0.

    D&D General What are underused-but-iconic D&D elements?

    Underused and iconic? Halflings.

    D&D 5E (2014) The October D&D Book is Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons

Well, I like dungeons. I like dragons. But what I really like are Dungeons AND Dragons.

D&D 5E (2014) How many combat encounters per adventuring day does your group have?

I've had anywhere from 1 to 15 (The 15 was a dungeon the PCs completely outleveled but they were under a time constraint so it was still exciting). Mixing it up really keeps the PCs on their toes. The key to doing lots of fights is to have all the prep done (so if using minis or tokens you have...
