    D&D 5E (2014) managing the bard's Concentration spells

I love dissonant whispers. It's a rare direct damage Wisdom save spell. It's amazing if you have front line combatants in your party, especially a melee rogue. If you do have a melee rogue its flee feature never really ceases to be useful.

Finally getting some use out of Chapter 4 (Other than Backgrounds)

Eggs-actly. My trait is "bad word play". I shall take my Inspiration now, thank you.

Finally getting some use out of Chapter 4 (Other than Backgrounds)

I think it's lack of confidence in knowing your character. In my current campaign, all of one session old, I explained your version of awarding inspiration. They understood (or at least seemed to) and a benefit is that the game is a married couple and two sisters. One of the sisters is new...

Pages From The Upcoming Nautical D&D Book!

I love U1 so much I've run it twice in 5e and am currently running it for a third time. Never played it as a kid but I believe my friend's parents owned a copy. There is a fantastic set of maps for U1 someone posted on this site. U2 and U3 are good but I don't think they hold a candle to U1...

Official D&D Sage Advice Compendium Updated

Every time Shield Master devolves into a multi-hundred post argument I get a thrill that I'm the one who asked the question on Twitter in the first place. Created a Twitter account just to ask the question, in fact. You're welcome. Give XP if you are thankful. Laugh at me if you rue the day I...

What "non-main" book do you use the most?

Like someone else said, my most used book is whatever adventure I'm playing. Could be from any edition. Right now I'm on part 2 of 2 in Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh.

Who's Multiclassing With Who? More D&D Beyond Stats!

Yeah, the first chart is a mess. Is like whoever made them went nuts in Excel without really knowing the best way to present data.

Larry Elmore On Composing The Companions Of The Lance Art

Absolutely. Flipping through the massive tome of Elmore art you see a lot of the models used and it becomes immediately obvious why the final pictures look like they do. EDIT: The text from The Complete Elmore for this picture: When I started to paint this piece the marketing department wanted...

Ever feel bad for a monster?

I rarely try to make my players feel bad but it's really fun when I try because I've always succeeded. I guess because it's so rare in D&D the players assume something really has gone wrong.

Artificer UA to be released in February

Did you pay any money for any 5e product? Then you have failed to take responsibility for your own game. Instead, you have relied on others to do the work for you.

    Ranged Options for All Classes

Mathematically this is only true if you had a less than 50% chance to hit normally. This is usually not the case in 5e where the average hit chance is somewhere around 60-65% for someone with a max attack stat for their level. In other words, if you had a 40% chance of missing in the first...

Larry Elmore On Composing The Companions Of The Lance Art

One thing I loved about Elmore's art is how easily it translated to black and white line drawings.

Larry Elmore On Composing The Companions Of The Lance Art

If you get a chance to meet Larry Elmore at a convention, do so. I have his huge collected artwork signed and he also signed my coverless Red Basic set Players Book and its eBay replacement with a cover.

New "Stranger Things" D&D Starter Set Announced

My Basic and Expert sets purchased in 1984 and 1985 came with dice and a crayon. The Red Box Basic Set I purchased from ebay to replace my heavily used set came with a crayon (BRAND NEW!) and dice (UNCOLORED!)

D&D 5E (2014) Horde Breaker and Heavy Crossbow Loading Property Question

You can trigger Horde Breaker off of Green Flame Blade or Booming Blade and those use the Cast a Spell action. Though you can't, of course, use either of those with a ranged weapon attack like shooting a crossbow.

    Help calculating Fighter damage

HP for monsters, at least low level monsters, is about twice what it was in second edition. To increase damage: Fighters have up to four attacks, Action Surge, and all Fighting Styles. Paladins have two attacks, Smites and some Fighting Styles. Rangers have two attacks, Hunter's Mark, and some...

Humans, Fighters, and Life Domain Most Popular On D&D Beyond

The subclass numbers are useless. 8.4% of active characters are clerics and 10.2% of active characters are life clerics. Do you see the problem here? The subclass data should only include PCs of level 3 or higher in at least one class so all PCs have at least one subclass. It's possible...
