D&D 5E (2014) What should we buy before it (possibly) disappears?

I've gone back and downloaded anything from DTRPG that I don't already have. This is why I love PDFs.

D&D 5E (2014) What should we buy before it (possibly) disappears?

Some publishers have stated they will withdraw their product in the face of a possible new OGL. With this possibility on the very near horizon, what do you recommend people buy that they haven't already? Two recommendations from me. First, Skirmisher Publishing. I bought one pdf from Drive Thru...

OGL: Kobold Press 'Raising Our Flag' For New Open RPG

Just bought $264 of Kobold Press stuff to go with the two Midgard books I have (Southlands and City of Cats, both purchased at a local game store for 50% off at a Black Friday sale) I don't know if Kobold Press are the "good guys" but I do know who the bad guys are.

D&D General Are you jumping ship? What will you be switching to?

I haven't purchased any WotC 5e books in several years. Candlekeep Mysteries (March 16, 2021) and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (November 13, 2018) being the last two. I have, however, purchased a lot of 3rd party 5e stuff and other RPGs in that time. I'd probably keep with 5e but look to...

D&D General "In My General Experience Playing D&D, DMs Care More About Setting Lore Than Players Do" (a poll)

I think this is true and it probably has to be true. I will say, however, that my favorite campaigns as a player were campaigns I was really into the lore and cared about where we were and what we were doing. I was into one campaign so much that when I moved away the DM made me an NPC.

D&D 5E (2014) The Neutral Referee, Monty Haul, and the Killer DM: History of the GM and Application to 5e

My absolute favorite way to play and run a game is as close to neutral as possible. It's probably why I gravitate towards published adventures to run. I find it easier to be a neutral referee for an adventure someone else wrote. I find I can get some real tension the closer I get to neutral...

D&D 5E (2014) The Next D&D Book is JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RADIANT CITADEL

When it comes to settings and adventures I think third party products are just so much better. I've spent way too much on Kickstarter projects. Though if this were a Kickstarter I'd pass as there's nothing particularly interesting about it. 2022 is shaping up to be the fourth straight year I...

D&D General worst (real) advice for DMs

Of course the cupcake is content. Look at that d20 roll.

D&D General worst (real) advice for DMs

"Sure, you can do X. It won't break the game." Especially terrible when said by a game developer.

    D&D 5E (2014) Multiverse Theory and you

I find the WotC official stance that all worlds are connected to be very unappealing. It adds nothing to any game I'd ever run or play in or have ever run or played in. It does take up pages in books I won't buy and developer time away from things I might actually buy so I guess it's a net...

D&D 5E (2014) Does your concern about adding more classes to 5e D&D stem from multiclassing?

My problem with new classes and subclasses is system bloat. I think we are already at that point. I'd rather see more done with Culture (which doesn't really exist mechanically in 5e) and Backgrounds.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D Lore Changes: Multiversal Focus & Fey Goblins of Prehistory

This is definitely a sign for me to tap out of WotC D&D products. I don't care much for the multiverse or generic D&D lore or the changes. I'm just not that invested in any of it.

Critical Role Critical Role show kickstarter update: Backers have to get Amazon prime to get the show

I backed the MST3K Kickstarter a few years ago and one major plus is that you could get disks of the season so no matter what ended up happening you'd get something. Turns out they were picked up by Netflix but I still have my disks (signed, too!) I'd have shied away from contributing to this...

D&D General Are NPCs like PCs?

The main benefit to me for an NPC to be statted like a PC is that I don't have to remember bespoke rules for every NPC that might be met along the way. We are close with all NPCs and monsters having attributes and saving throws but trying to remember what the special abilities of the NPC...

D&D 5E (2014) List of All 33 Races in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse

I actually liked much of the information in Tome of Foes and Guide to Monsters but when you put it like this I realize the presentation was really poor. It's more palatable if it's part of a particular setting but much of the lore as presented just read like a mediocre author's creative writing...

The Dungeons and Dragons film: Calls for shameless fan service

I've thought this was a great way to go for years. The DM, of course, is the BBEG. Next movie all the roles are switched.

    D&D 5E (2014) Levels 1-4 are "Training Wheels?"

1-2 are training wheels. Unless you play a Cleric and then, ha ha, you have to pick your subclass at level 1. Sucks to be you brand new D&D player.

D&D 5E (2014) List of All 33 Races in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse

I'd like racial lore that is full of suggestions rather than something written like it's the new default. Like the thread I started a few days ago titled Make Your Dwarves More Interesting. There is stuff in there that is obviously mutually exclusive but it all looks Dwarvish to me. It's a...

D&D General Goodman Games switched to Indigogo for Dungeon Alphabet 5th printing.

I'd be happy if more companies moved away from Kickstarter. I'll follow projects I like and then just buy directly from the company after the KS ends. Just take KS out of the chain completely.
