D&D 5E (2024) I think we are on the cusp of a sea change.

I don't know a lot, either, aside from it being the Critical Role setting and that my college friend who is now 49 loves it and she has started DMing an online campaign I am a player in. My extremely limited understanding is that it's pretty generic with good background details of the various...

D&D 5E (2024) I think we are on the cusp of a sea change.

My serious answer is it would probably look like Exandria.

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

No, he's asserting he knows the etymology of the word. "I know where that came from". Don't pretend he didn't say that. It's folk etymology that has no actual bearing on reality. So he's wrong. Just because it's his reality doesn't mean it's the actual reality we all live in. People are allowed...

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

He's wrong on where the word "Indian" comes from. It's derived from the Indus River. Nothing to do with god.

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

The Ylaruam book is straight up Middle Eastern (Arab and Persian) culture with some fantasy bits thrown on top. It wasn't as obvious to me until I became an Arabic linguist and learned a lot about Arabic and Persian culture. The Ylaruam book is the most respectful RPG book I've ever seen that...

D&D 5E (2024) I think we are on the cusp of a sea change.

I'm making the mistake of responding to the first post before reading 12 other pages. Y'all are some chatty Cathys. I think it's definitely moving towards "story first" with far less emphasis on dungeons or dragons, so to speak. Unfortunately, I think D&D is terrible as this kind of "story...

    D&D 5E (2014) Recent Errata clarifications

When WotC does their surveys and a question about favorite races is included I always choose Dwarf and Halfling because they are criminally under utilized in many of the supplements going back to 1e. A million subraces of elf but what I'd love is more interesting dwarfs and halfling. I know it...

D&D General "Red Orc" American Indians and "Yellow Orc" Mongolians in D&D

I loved the silly parts of Gaz 10 and Orc Wars is a fun game. And modeling a fantasy culture on something real world isn't problematic or it would be near impossible to have anything anyone could relate to. Using a term like "gris gris" isn't a problem. If it is, the only thing that would be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Latest D&D Errata: Drow, Alignment, & More

Aside from getting money for Christmas, this is the exact state I'm in. Despite falling in love with 5e the moment I read the free rules back in 2014 I am no longer the target audience. I have gobs of cash I could spend on WotC products but have bought nothing since late 2019. What I have done...

    D&D 5E (2014) Latest D&D Errata: Drow, Alignment, & More

Really hard to make creatures and races feel like anything other than mush if they keep removing attributes and descriptions and make everything feel samey-samey. I haven't bought a WotC D&D book in two years and I don't see a reason to keep buying them.

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos - An In-Depth Review

I had lots of time to kill and read Strixhaven in several sessions at the bookstore. I didn't end up purchasing it and now haven't purchased an official 5e D&D product since Dungeon of the Mad Mage in November, 2018 (has it really been that long?). Short review: I give the book a 'C' grade...

D&D General Ranking the Pillars of Play

I chose Exploration > Social > Combat. The unfortunate thing about this is I think it's also the order of what's hardest to pull off. Perhaps that's why I chose this order because good Exploration sticks out when I play. As of this post the 1st/2nd/3rd votes are Combat: 11/23/7 Exploration...

    D&D General Your Characters' Families

I routinely try for the blandest, most normal family background possible. My parents have normal vocations (often farmer). They are still alive. They were good parents. My siblings are also all still alive. None of them have dark secrets.

D&D General The DM Should Only Talk 30% of the Time... Agree or Disagree?

I'd like to think as DM I talk about 1/2 the time considering I'm almost always 1/2 of the conversation. Though I do have a few house rules that encourage play solely among the PCs and I always find the times that happens to be really entertaining as a DM as I have zero control or input in that...

D&D General Which movie rating would you use to describe your D&D campaigns?

PG-13. The Indiana Jones vibe is what I'm looking for in a campaign. I'd never run nor play in an R-rated or above campaign.

    D&D General Miniature Survey

Lego minifigs for the good guys. Tokens for the bad guys. Lego minifigs allow a good mix and match of head, torso, legs, accessories in a way that miniatures don't.

D&D 5E (2014) Who Picks the Campaign? DMs, Players, and Choice

Massive snippage because Snarf is wordy but at least he put the important part in italics. This is absolutely true for me. Had a great DM when I was in college and he was full of fun ideas for campaigns. I tried them all (he was my roommate so it was easy to do so) and the campaign he cared the...

D&D 5E (2014) What 3 Settings did you pick in the Survey

I recently bought Thundarr on blu-ray and every single episode is a potential D&D adventure. The episode titles alone look like they were ripped off from an AD&D module cover. The mix of sci-fantasy was all over the place in the late '70s and early '80s.

D&D 5E (2014) What are your (up to) three favorite character classes?

In 5e it's Rogue, Fighter, Cleric.
