Honestly it makes more sense to have a lot of minor magic items around in modern D&D. Where it use to be stuff like "Wizards are rare" to "Just send your kid off to Wizard school next to the Sorcerers, Warlocks, Bards, and anyone and every other class that wants so magic" then yeah it magic...

A lot of people play the published adventures (lvl 1-10) which are typically one and done and then move onto the next published adventure with new characters. I don't see Bastions being used in those unless the published adventure actually calls for it.

Video games took "leveling up" and a ton of other things from D&D. Modern D&D has in turn taken things from video games.

The old art was basically friends and family drawing pictures.
