D&D General Why grognards still matter

I disagree, it had some interesting bits but the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

Looks like an attempt to police language. I really cannot see this going well.

    On warning points...

I never thought of it until you mentioned it but now that you did...... However, it brought up another thought... What are points? Nevermind, I figured it out, but I also found out that I can click the warnings and look at the reasons, surely that cannot be right? @Morrus

    On warning points...

Out of curiosity? If one had warning say 2/2 and one expired, then it would be 1/2 but if one then incurred another one would it be 2/3 or 2/2?

IT would probably lead to trolling some posters with short fuses or aggressive posting styles to get them banned. Or that was my thought, but it appears we can see them. Is this new? I never noticed it before.

Checking the Geology of a Map

Just want to comment on this, my first thoughts were; where is the rain falling and how much. sufficient and reliable rainfall and you get forest (add in poor drainage and you get bog, which is not the same as swamp). To me the eastern end of the map looks fine but how is the western end...

D&D General Why grognards still matter

I think that I phrased my thoughts badly in my initial post. I was thinking that in crpg or tv or movies the player/reader/viewer is largely experiencing a story authored by another. I generally do not consider setting material as a story, it has elements that can be used to construct stories...

Which is why I do not like ones with too much material.

TTRPG are where the players make the story. If I want to passively enjoy a pre-created story I read a book or watch a show.

D&D 5E (2024) Is Counterspell less frustrating now?

Used it and had it used on me in a recent session. I actually like it, there is a player in the group that stopped taking it because of the nerf.

I mostly agree with you, what I like about the concept is going to a recognisable magical world (or trapped in the game world) and playing with the tropes of that. I will admit I find many of the actual efforts a bit meh. I regard the time travel thing as its own thing, but I think that the real...

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Another thing that should be noted is that ttrpg's are not a high spending market. There are only so many adventures that a group has time to play. Plus I really doubt that return on setting books is really worth the cost of developing them. Before, people come at me about this, WoTC has produce...

D&D 5E (2024) Question: I have players using dnd beyond char creators, will it be 2024?

Spells are the biggest one to watch. Both spells are presented in spell selection, and the old versions are marked legacy (at least for 2024 characters, not sure about 2014 characters) and unless one is paying attention it is easy to pick the wrong version.

D&D 5E (2024) Question: I have players using dnd beyond char creators, will it be 2024?

If they are making new character the character creator will present the 2024 options first for the classes. One has to scroll down for the older versions.

The problem with this, is it entangles with the existing player base re purchasing the new rules. It will be at least 4 or 5 years before we can untangle that from the rate of acquisition of new players (if any) assuming we can find a suitable proxy for book sales.

But are they still 60%. Given that the core books have sold in similar or greater number than the 2014/115 sales, that would indicate that the player base has being growing each year by a number similar to the original 5e player base. Unless new players are acquired evenly across all age...

Fair enough, and I remember that now, still the over 40 cohort in total is between 11% and 13% of the total.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

A lot of special pleading that "grognards" matter in the absence of evidence, is going on around in this thread. From what I can tell, based on the last demographics I have seen, one has 46 plus as a rounding error and from another article I could find 40+ is 13 percent. I am deeply sceptical...

90% of D&D Games Stop By Level 10; Wizards More Popular At Higher Levels

It should be quite trivial for them to tell. At least enough to be of use to them in market analysis. First off, some folks make a big deal that D&DBeyond is self-selecting but when the sample size is in the tens of thousands, or higher then the sample size is big enough to be representative and...

To be honest I would love to see a Dresden files TV series or something similar. I stalled out around 4 or 5 books in, The Serrated Edge or Tregarde novels would also make an excellent series as would Senan McGuire's October Day books. I would love to see a magic returns series or for than...
